Over-the-counter medicines and health insurance

How to determine whether a particular drug is OTC

As per my medical insurance policy all medicines except for OTC(which can be taken over the counter without doctors prescription) are covered.

I have a number of pharmacy bills that I have to submit for re-imbursement and would like to know if there is a way(any online site) to find which of the prescribed medicines are OTC(Without asking the pharmacists).

This would help me know for which medicines I will not be paid back.

Thanks.

i think it depends on the color of the paper the prescription was written on. i know that sounds silly, but i think blue was not OTC.

Prescriptions on pinking / red paper are NOT OTC but prescription only = Rezeptpflichtig.
You could also google the names of the drugs to get the infomration if they arepresciption only in Germany.

thanks MT! i couldn't decide on the best way to describe the color of paper thing. yes, i meant pink was not OTC (pink=Rezeptpflichtig). boy this jetlag has got me weirded out.

Just do a Froogle search; if you can purchase it online, it's OTC.

I've had "mixed" prescriptions on one pink paper... one OTC drug and one prescription drug on the same pink paper, so I don't think the pink vs. blue paper is always 100% accurate.

Strange but all the prescriptions I get from the doctor are always White in color never got a colored one. But as suggested, I can always Google it and try purchasing it online.

just submit them all, your insurance will tell you which are and are not OTC.

If you still have the medicine boxes, look for the word Verschreibungpflichtig which means prescription only.

A doctor who is legally allowed to write prescriptions and does so on that basis totally outide of any schme or kasse.
