Health insurance for pets - Germany

General advice, recommended companies, etc.

Verena-bb
In 2 weeks we're leaving the UK behind and coming out to Germany. I'm gradually getting everything sorted but I need to get health cover for my dog (I have it here to cover the possibility of vets bills and so I want the same kind of thing in Germany) - can anyone advise? Also can anyone recommend a vet in the Essen area who has reasonable English? Thanks.

I spoke to our vet about insurance for Pepsi and Shirley but he siad it really wasn't worth it.

As far as I know Pet Insurance doesn't exist in Germany but I'm not sure...v

Of course it does. Just Search for "Tierkrankenversicherung" or run a price comparison here

I want to get both my dogs insured for accident or extra medical care need etc. They are insured acording to law here in Germany, but I was hoping for insurance, just in case.

Does any of you have any recommedation from own experience?

Thanks for any help provided.

Thanks for help.
The only think I have realized so far as difference between Germany and UK is that either out vet in UK was very posh one, or we have cheap one here

while I a liability insurance for a dog (or dogs, I myself have a Giant Schnautzer and a Ridgeback) is really important, I have yet to see any pet health insurance worth the money. From a professional standpoint (and this is mirrored by the judgement from FINANZTEST) none of the insurance on the markets are really a fair deal for the pet owner. Therefore I am not offering them to my clients nor use them myself for my dogs nor would recommend to get one...

We don't have pet health insurance for our two dogs, either. We read those reports that Starshollow mentions and it really didn't seem worth it.

When we moved to Germany we checked with our vet for the best health care insurance for dogs and she came up with Agila. Our dog was always healthy before but last year she really had a lot of problems and without the insurance we would have paid a lot of money out of our pocket. In the end our dog needed an OP for a 1,000 Euro and Agila paid within two days ...

I can only recommend them and good luck

Hmm... 32 euro per month per dog for small dogs under 5 years of age makes 384 euros per year (per dog) with a max coverage of 600 euro. We decided that we can afford taking the risk of having no insurance and covering the potential extra or difference of 216 euros ourselves.
