I am about to drive with my girlfriend to W-burg. What could I do there today for fun, entertainment, etc?

Get drunk on Franconian wine, of course.

Hi,

We are planning a weekend trip to Würzburg. I don't know anything about the place, only that it's conveniently located for the occasion and has old buildings (churches, residenz, a fortress) that are worth seeing(?). So, if one only has Saturday and half of Sunday, what is the best way to spend this time? Do any of the restaurants serve (good) vegetarian food? We could always find a pasta place, but to be honest I'm getting really sick and tired of the pasta/pizza route... This is my first (albeit mini) vacation for ages, so I'm really wanting to relax and enjoy (if I still remember how). smile.gif

We were there just a few weekends ago. There is a fabulous looking restaurant on the bridge over the river called Alte Mainmuhle ( http://www.alte-mainmuehle.de/ ) with vegetarian selections. It looked very romantic & that is why we passed having our 9 year old son in tow. Otherwise the German restaurants have the Kasespatzle as something to fall back on.

Have a wonderful time!

Many thanks for the info. The place looks very nice.

An absolute must is the Residenz, a World Heritage Site (see picture, below). Afterwards, take a tour of the wine cellars and in the evening eat at one of the wonderful Weinkeller. Although not vegetarian per se, in my experience they usually have a couple of innovative vegetarian meals on the menu (i.e. not Käsespätzle).

Other attractions include the Marienberg and the Marienkirche. If you have time to travel, the village and gardens at Veitshochheim are well worth a visit, while a little further afield are the towns and villages of the Romantische Strasse, which starts in Würzburg.

As an Ex-Wurzburger I commend you on your choice of towns. If were you I would drink enough of the big .25L glasses wine and do away with the need for dinner at all. However if you lead a more sober lifestyle than me then I can recommend a few places.

Bella Napoli, Neubaustr. (close to the old bridge), I know you said you have had enough Italian, but this is simply the best Italian food I have ever had, including when in Italy. If you go, tell Mimi that Robert said hi (not my name, but due to a misunderstanding it is now my name there).

Julispital, JuliusPromenade. Good German food and usually fresh fish. They also have some great wines.

The aformentioned AlteBrucke MainMuhle, on the old bridge. Good food and really good Spatburgunder. This is a good one to save for the summer when you sit out on the balcony that hangs over the bridge.

Backofele, in an alley near the old bridge (ask someone). Great German food, but not alot of veggie dishes. However if your travel partner eats meat, tell them to get the Schweinruckensteak (the one with mushrooms). Also this places has the best bratkartoffeln.

If you go tour a winery go to the Burgerspital and see the 500ish year old bottle of wine they have there, the StaatlicherHofKeller is also and good tour. Go to the Festung on the hill. Have a good trip and feel free to PM any questions.

Edit:
Stay away from the beer, it sucks compared the rest of the country, but did I mention that the wine is good? However if you must have beer there is only one place to go that has a few good ones including Kreuzberger and if you havent been to Kreuzberg you should seriously consider a trip sometime.

Right on dude. A friend of mine in Portland is studying there and has always stated it is a beautiful city. I also recieved an invite so I too will enjoy Dolfans recommendations.

Sounds like we've picked the perfect place for a weekend trip. I'll plan on drinking loads of wine. Thanks for all the restaurant suggestions, this might well be the first trip where we won't do a 30-minute pre-dinner "let's try to desperately find some food and settle for good old pasta w/ tomato sauce" hike. BTW I never knew what Käsespätzle is. I'll definitely have to try it out soon. A stupid question: can I always count on it being vegetarian i.e. no surprise bits of bacon or such?

I guess that with Kasespatzle I have never found bacon or other meat in it. Guess it is possible. Usually it is listed on the vegetarian part of the menu. Beware if you have never had it before. It is cheesey & buttery & very, very bad for you. However, it tastes wonderful with beer rolleyes.gif

Wait, I take back the never finding meat in my Kasespatzle. Well, not in the Kasespatzle itself, but with the salad that usually comes with it. Really peek under the lettuce part to see if there is a kraut salat that has ham or something like that. It amazes me that Kasespatzle is on the vegetarian menu, but the salad comes with little hunks of meat.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess vegetarian is sometimes considered anything that isn't mainly meat tongue.gif

What are the bars and clubs like? Any recommendations?
