Hi,
One month new to Munich and new to the board... I'm from San Francisco where you can throw a rock and find cafes with free DSL, but I'm having trouble here (if I can find a cafe I may not need to get DSL at home).
CAN (Cafe Am Nord) has 802.11, but it doesn't seem free and I can't navigate to any page to even let me sign up (though I can get to the access point config page, but don't want to start playing). Usually back in SF you go, get your $1 coffee, sit down, plug into the wall (I haven't tried to use the cafe outlet, I'm sure "stealing power" here may be frowned upon) and connect to the net.
Anyone here know where a spot is?
Also, I see the signs for Vodafone UMTS and the wireless card... any expereince with this? Also do they have a decent flat rate price? If so maybe one could go with that as opposed to DSL, (albeit a bit slower).
Thanks in advance for any help and I hope to make it to the Tuesday get together.

WLAN facilities in Munich change so fast that it's hard to keep up to date with where offers it and where is free. Places which used to be free are now subscriber only, places which used to be subscriber only are now free.
Here's a list that was up-to-date a couple of months ago but now isn't (but it's a start):

Thanks for the link. I thought that Cafe Am Nordbad was free (and 2 blocks from my house), but it something was askew when I went last week. The folks there weren't WiFi support folks so it was no use. I will try again tonight and post an update on if it works (or offer them free support services to get the thing up!).
The other option isn't so hot... in Holhenzollen Platz (sp?) where I live if one goes to the fountain there is an unsecure 802.11 net (there are two others that are protected). However the idea of stealing from my neighbor (especially if they don't have flat rate) isn't quite "cricket" to me (apologies to the Brits). Plus sitting around the fountain with your notebook isn't a decent longer term solution.
I think I'll pop into the Vodafone store and inquire about UMTS... I'm sure it's expensive. Just as I left San Francisco AT&T introduced a new UMTS service that was $30.00/month flat rate. If they have the same for even double I'm in.

Also, you can just try your luck if you are anywhere in town.
Here in Augsburg, I can pickup 2 sometimes 3 hotspots from my flat and surf my life away for free!
I tried a couple of google suggestions for wifi hotspot maps but they just timed out or looked out of date, as Bob said earlier, things change pretty fast in this area.
I was out testing my lappy the other day and asked politely in a cafe if I could use the power socket for a few minutes only to be told no, which is a bit of a bummer since the akku in the laptop is kaput. Still, can´t argue with broadband speed internet access for free. Just gonna have to get the battery sorted out.
The hotspot equipped cafes here have fairly discrete stickers in the windows, like this...

but likeisay, my nearest cafe is 200m away through quite a few walls, and I get 50% signal strength. So try your luck.

Does anyone know of a place that will allow you to surf for extended periods of time (as in a few hours) if you have to work on something for example?

Try looking at the Wiki section of this website. There is a list of free hot spots.

Or you can go and get one of the many Stumbling programs
and find AP's/Hotspots yourself...
Last time I went thru Downtown I found over 4k AP's...
They always seem to multiply just before/after Xmas...

My point was more to know whether anyone knew one off the top of their heads which is "extended stay friendly". I am fully aware that there are 5 trillion hotspots in MUC.

Cafe Puck didn't seem to have a problem with me being there for 2 or so hours one weekday morning. I had breakfast and tea but that certainly didn't fill 2 hours. I wouldn't necessarily try the same trick on the weekend or in the evenings.

KraftAkt gay internet café has a completely free WLAN Access Point access. If you want to use their computers, it costs 1 Euro for 1/2 an hour I think. They do a good strong coffee too!

I need a free(preferably) WLAN hotspot near Rotkreuzplatz tonight. I have looked on the
cafespots.de website and found...
Cafe NeuhausenBlutenburgstr. 106
München-Neuhausen
Kostenloser WLAN Hotspot
Has anyone been here that can confirm it works ok? They also have Cafe Am
Nordbad in the same list and know that was not free last time I checked, so if anyone can confirm, that would be great. Alternatively, if you know of any others near Rotkreuzplatzs that would also be great

Cheers,
Tom...

Hi there, this one is not listed in the WLAN overview -- Nymphenburg palace, in the restaurant inside the park (called Palmenhaus). Free WLAN connection, estimated, however, only @64 kbps. But for basic work this should be enough. Search for SSID: PALMENHAUS.
When there is sun outside, this is a pleasant place to be, sitting in a garden shaded by trees, having a cofee or a beer, watching young cheeks passing by (besides that, the service is also very kind). So if you want to have a sunday walk with your notebook, Nymphenburg might be a place to go. See ya there ;).

Nooo, not that, that would probably distract my attention from the notebook for a while. But as the sun gets hotter, less and less clothes are being applied.

You mean worn? i.e. less and less clothes are being worn? If so, then it'd be: people are wearing fewer and fewer clothes.

Sound like what I wanted to say, thank you. Managing 3 different languages has become a bit complicated for me. Gruess Gott.
There is also a place in the middle of town at
U-bahn Karlsplatz: Tahitian Noni Cafe, Sonnenstrasse 9.
The WLAN is free and it is also a completely non-smoking restaurant which is sometimes a hard find in Munich!!
Drinks and food are both reasonably priced, and the desserts are yummy! Open Mon - Sat at 8am to close (around midnight on weekends, 10pm weekdays.)

Cafe Neuhausen with laptop last night, asked the waitress about wifi. Nope, she said, so scratch this one from the list of hotspots.

Hi all. Just wanted to add that KraftAkt has such a strong signal that you can use it from neighbouring cafes. There is another one right next to it called Cafe Rubin but its very small and noisy. And there is an Asian Restaurant across the street called "PHU QUOC" which is empty every time I've been there, despite the delicious Thai curry they serve. You can surf on KraftAkt's WLAN in both places.
Cheers.

My hubby will be visiting Munich (at least
Garching anyway) for a few days, so I'm trying to find him some local wifi. I noticed that the TT Wiki is blank. Does anyone have any recommendations for Garching or surrounding areas?

Yeah, I've seen that website. It lists 5 specifically for
Garching, only one of which is free, and another similar site doesn't list it as free. I was looking for something a little more localized to the Garching area than a list of 488 for Munich and perhaps with more reliable and recent info. Thanks, though!

Wireless hotspots are everywhere.. Just turn on your wirelesss device, find/connect to an open AP and surf away..
You don't need a list, there are prob. 10k+ Wireless access points all over the city.. Some secured, some not..

Hey all,
new to the city and completely clueless. So I brought my computer from the US but I still have not yet subscribed to any type of itnernet service (they seem to require a full 2 year contract or some non mobile home installation w 3 months contract).
Therefore, does anyone know of any cafe's that has free wifi since I cannot pickup any conncetion that is not locked? Living in glockenbach area by the Gärtnerplatz.
Thanks in advance!

You can goto 2 I know!
Zoozies Bar cafe Wittelsbacherstr. 15 80469 München, Germany
and
Shamrock bar ( Irish bar ) Trautenwolfstr. 6, Schwabing
As for the other problem ...
I use Alice, they give a package which includes a 1 month finish in your contract with out a problem - you will probabily have to buy a Wlan modem costs about 40 Euro.
By the way I heard that, even if you sign a 2 year contract, that they will let you about of it within 1 month, if you are leaving the countery or somthing like that, by order of the law.

Very unlikely, especially with any other provider other than D-Telekom.

When I signed up to for an internet service with T-Com (stupidly) , they said it was a 2 year contract but I can cancel at any time without any problems whatsoever, which was a lie. I had so many problems getting it cancelled, and it took around 4 months before they finally did cancel it. They weren't even able to provide me with a phone/net connection because of technical problems but they were still insistent that I had signed up to a 2 year contract and so therefore it doesn't matter. Wankers.

The San Francisco Coffee Company cafes have wireless internet access. It´s not free, but you can buy a €25 prepaid voucher that allows you unlimited use and downloads for one calendar month at any of their locations, e.g.
Odeonsplatz, Kurfürstenplatz,Laim Bahnhof,etc,etc.

I have an almost Free suggestion... FON (http://www.fon.com). All you have to do is buy one of their routers and that gives you the right to surf on any other FON router. I assume there are plenty of them in your area as FON attempted to completely cover the Glockenbachviertel not too long ago (more info on this page, if you speak German:
http://blog.fon.com/de/archive/events/fonc...t-ans-netz.html ) The FON Glockenbachviertel page is
http://www.glockenbachviertel.comYou could give the router to someone else to use that has internet (like a neighbor!), but use the free FON access that comes with it.
