I have tried the embassy already on this and can't get a clear answer. Basically they tell me it is very difficult.

I was born in Germany, but my parents moved to Canada when I was 2 years old. We became Canadians soon after

It used to be that if you left Germany as a minor (under 18) you never lost your citizenship and could get it back. But about 10 years ago this changed and now it seems very difficult. I have not had luck getting a clear, step by step criteria for this process.

My entire father's family lives in Germany and I visit regulary. I also speak intermediate German and studied it at University.

Any help to clarify the current criteria for me to get my citizenship back would be helpful.

Thanks,

Markus

Dual Citizenship is a very complicated but much discussed topic around these parts, all of which can be read here. I think Hazza's story best highlights the very many complications, convulted conversations, and the very little likelihood of getting what you want.

From what I understand, however, German citizenship is possible to obtain on two primary conditions: you live here eight years and you give up your other citizenship. I could be wrong on that as it is a very complicated topic so its worth reviewing the links above and if you're really serious, getting official legal advice.

Not exactly a parallel but I once worked with a guy from Iran who had the opposite problem: Born outside Germany but grew up here and wanted to become the nationality he felt he was. After over a decade of hassling the authorities they eventually agreed with his claim despite nothing in the way he was born or brought up changing.

The moral is simple: Keep trying.

do your parents still have your and their original German birth certificates? It's quite a grey area, thing is I think you would probably have to give up your Canadian citizenship...
