Earlier today I was on
www.studenten-wg.de looking for a room for a diploma student coming in September. I replied to one advert but must not have fully understood the German word "zwischenmenschliche Gefälligkeit".
Here was the response I got in German, with English translation below. If any of you are looking for a flat, feel free to respond. I think I'll pass.

Hello You,
many thanks for your e-mail. My apartment at
Münchner Freiheit, which you enquired about, is still available. As mentioned, I am asking a very reasonable rent. In return I expect, as I wrote, an interpersonal favour at least once a month. What is meant by this is clear. I would like to sleep with you. Always with protection and nothing perverse. If you are still interested you can gladly contact me. With mutual affection... a quick rental agreement is possible..

At least he's being up front about it. It would be worse if you took the room and then a week later he says "by the way, you have to sleep with me tonight if you want to keep the room".

Once a month? Sounds like he needs some viagra!
I like "interpersonal favour" though. Nice touch.

but have you EVER heard of anything like that before? The guy doesn't even know what I look like or anything. I thought about asking to meet him at the well in gunter murphy's while I watch him from a table in the corner. Wonder if he'd show.

Nope, can't say that I have ever heard of something like this in my entire life. I am not the least bit surprised by it though...this IS Germany afterall. Sex doesn't seem to be a subject regarded with much modesty by the Krauts.
Someone told me he didn't think the guy would have any problems finding a woman willing to exchange "interpersonal favours" for a room
If you do manage to lure him to Gunther's though Bee, take a camera! I bet he is at least a two bagger.

I've heard of people expecting babysitting or cleaning in return for a cheap room, but I've never heard this one before...

There's nothing in the ad to say that it was placed by a man, or that he/she is looking for a woman. Just a human, in fact, so whoever it is seems to be not fussy.

It's definately a guy looking for a girl. He specifies "Studentin", i.e. "female student". Here's the original post:

Yes, and his supposed name is Herr Mueller, if you look at the bottom of the ad. I guess he was direct, yes. Always with protection and nothing perverse, except the fact that he asks you to prostitute yourself for the room. Sad thing is, you still have to pay at all. Does he know the going rate for these things? I think I could get a better flat in town if I chose that route.

It's apparently common practice in, where else, Amsterdam. Check this:
mikesapartment.com(WARNING! VERY PORNOGRAPHIC!)
BTW: a friend of mine has a book about the laws and regulations regarding apartment lets and rentals. It's a bloody big book! 200 pages or something of small print. No where does it talk about these terms and conditions though!

That's pretty funny; must be a joke though. Otherwise he's got a brain the size of a pea and cajones the size of Texas. Would be neat if you responded and brought along
- a large male friend in a batman costume
- a copy of Y tu mamá también
- a digital camera
- a big shit-eating grin
and see if he's got follow-through.

I read this on one of the websites for accommodation in Munich. I thought it was quite hilarious

Achtung!!

Hey! That's the same exact perv as before, I'm sure of it! He must have had some luck over the last year, to still be trying! And of course he's targeting us poor students. The thing is, I'm surprised the girl has to pay at all!

I knew finding accommodation in Munich can be troublesome, but this surely beats everything.

Not at all uncommon.
Check out all the ads for free vacations and all the girl has to do is sleep with the guy a couple of times a week.
Now if he had 31 apartments like this, the guy is set for the month. But, I wonder how that would work with Sept., April, May, Nov., and Feb?

Same thing happens in France. As seen on BBC News today:
Flat in exchange for libertine servicesQUOTE (BBC News)
Ondine Millot - who in her day job is the court correspondent for the French daily paper - spent six months researching these advertisements and the people who place them, for an article which exposed the trade in property-for-sex. "I was very surprised to find out that this kind of thing was going on," she says. "We called a lot of men, I made something like 50 phone calls. Most of the ads that were 'against services', where no amount was specified for the rent, were men that were looking for sex in exchange for housing."

Well I have the deal of the century then. Sex once a month and I get free room and board and nice holidays.
