Every time I go for a quote on the VW Golf I am buying, the insurance agent replies that the type of Golf will affect my insurance rate. I have called the seller and she said there's nothing written on the back of the car in addition to "Golf". I have the Fahrzeugschein copy here, but can't for the life of me find any decipherable indication there, either. Any ideas? If you are a Golf owner, perhaps it's helpful to know that it's a 2000, two door, absolutely nothing sparkly or gadgety about it.
I'd appreciate any hints.

If it was built in 2000 that would make it a Mark IV, but they probably also want to know its engine size, fuel type, if its a GTI or whatever, if its a "special edition" (i.e. last run of a batch that they couldn't sell so stuck lots of extra plastic bits stuck on to alter the standard appearance and called it some poncy name), etc, etc, etc.

That's helpful, thanks! My German vocabulary doesn't extend as far as "engine size" and "fuel type". Does yours? Could you bitte translate?

It is a 17 digit code.
It is code E on the new Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (which is the replacement for the old Fahrzeugschein)
For a VW it will look something like thiis: WVWZZZ7MZ4V123456

Normally the Hersteller-Schlüssel-Nr. and the Typen-Schlüssel-Nr. would be enough for the insurer, both in the top row on that document.
The older document has them further down the page.

Is it a diesel? That'll narrow it down for starters. Better still lift the bonnet (or hood if you're of that persuasion) and see if there's any clue on the engine cover. None of that will necessarily give away if it's GTi, SE, S or other though...most people generally know what kind of car they own though!

On older vehicles it's Schlüsselnummer 2 (up to 4 digits - identifies the manufacturer) and Schlüsselnummer 3 (up to 6 digits - vehicle type) on the Fahrzeugschein (usually top of the centre page marked "Schlüsselnummern"). This is all you should need to identify the vehicle for an insurance estimate. No need for engine type, size or model details.

Thanks for all of your help! The thing is, I'm checking out a quote with an American company, and I don't think those numbers mean much to them. I can try it out, though.
