why anyone would want anything to do with AOL is beyond me. (sorry, it's true)
If you are asking about VoIP [making cheap calls using your computer, or a regular phone + the Linksys PAP2 box or similar]
- Skype is ridiculously simple to setup. Great for n00bies. +Includes encryption for Skype-to-Skype communications.
- VOIPSTUNT offers rates half of Skype or less.
120 days of free unlimited usage to major landlines when 10€ of credit are purchased.
300 minutes per week without paying.
I've been satisfied with them. Although there are a couple of bugs in their own software (Windows only, v3.00 beta 408) , they do not require usage of it, besides the initial sign-up. X-Lite is a free Softphone which works instead, Mac or Windows.
Alternatively, if you're asking about internet access through AOL dialup - find a neighbor with WLAN and ask to use theirs, or use a local cafe.
