Hi everyone,

I know that there is a thread for waiting time for work permits, but does anyone know about residence permits instead? I'm applying through the Germany Embassy in London, if any has had experience with them, would really appreciate any info -- I'm going out of my mind waiting for the appointment.

Are you from the UK? If so, you don't need a residence permit.

Nope, I'm a Singaporean (i.e non EU) in London. Sorry forgot to add that point..!

I remember when I was in London, I went to the German embassy there to apply for a work/residence permit and the woman told me it could take up to 12 weeks! blink.gif As it was in December with the holidays and all I decided to f it and book it over here and apply once I made it here. I'm American if that makes a difference. Depending on your situation, might be possible to apply once you are here. If you are considering applying from London book an appointment from like yesterday since I had to wait almost a month to see about the permits.

No way. 12 weeks?!? And I would have to give up my passport and be stuck here in London?

I am able to enter Germany on a Schengen visa, but I read that is not permissible to enter the country on a tourist visa and then changing it to a residence permit.

My situation is that I'm doing a full-time course in an art school in Germany (not university level) - already accepted, , do you think I can try to wing it and just apply in Germany instead? If yes, how long did it take for you in total to get the residence permit?

Thanks for your help!

Hi aien,

Are you sure you can apply for a residence permit from the German Embassy in London? If i remembered correctly, you have to apply for the residence permit at your country of origin.. (but i might be wrong.. sorry can't help much on that..)

But I'm almost 100% sure that you definitely cannot travel into Germany on a tourist visa and then convert it to a residence permit. (tried it sad.gif)

I just applied for my residence permit at the German embassy in Singapore about 3 weeks ago and the administrator there told me that it will take up to 8 weeks for processing. But for me it's all depended on how fast the Arbeitsamt takes to process my work permit, I'm not too sure about a study visa process..

Found this on the DAAD IC Singapore website.. hope it helps~

FAQ: I am a Singapore citizen intending to study in Germany. Do I need a visa?
Yes, you do. Only citizens of EU countries and of Australia, Canada, Honduras, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Liechtenstein, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and the USA do not need a visa to study at a German university. You are urgently warned against entering the country as a tourist; a tourist visa cannot be converted into a visa for study purposes after your arrival in Germany.

The German Embassy Singapore issues three types of educational visas:

*a language course visa, which is valid only for the duration of the course and cannot be subsequently converted into a student visa
*a student applicant visa, if you do not yet have a certificate of admission to higher education or confirmation of application; on receipt of the admission letter, it can be converted into a residence permit for student purposes at the aliens’ registration office (‘Ausländerbehörde’).
*a student visa (‘visa for study purposes’) valid for one year (renewable in Germany)

If you intend to commence your studies in Germany immediately after your language course, you need to apply for either a student visa or a student applicant visa before your arrival in Germany, otherwise you will have to leave the country at the end of the course and reapply from Singapore. The visa for a language course cannot be converted into a student visa or a student applicant visa in Germany!

In order to apply for a student visa, you must submit a valid passport and a number of passport photos, a completed application form for a residence permit, a letter of admission from a German university (‘Zulassungsbescheid’), authenticated copies of your educational certificates as well as proof of sufficient funding (a bank statement or similar), in order to show that you (or your parents, sponsor etc.) have enough financial resources to cover the living expenses incurred during your stay in Germany (minimum EUR 600 per month, i.e. EUR 7200 per year). Please submit the supporting documents in duplicate. Processing time for a student visa is about six to eight weeks.

For detailed information about the different types of visa and the application process in general, please refer to http://www.sing.diplo.de/en/01/Visabestimm...stimmungen.html
or contact the German Embassy’s consular section directly. The staff there will be pleased to assist you in all questions regarding the visa application process

Ok I've had my appointment already - so for people in my similar situation take note:

1. With regard at least to Singapore- Germany, one doesn't need to apply from the country of origin (thanks for bringing that up Serene)
2. the lady said it'd take 8-12 weeks, but the good thing is that I didn't have to hand in my passport, so no complaints!

Thanks everyone.

Hi aien

Just an update on my part, the German embassy just called me this morning to tell me that my residence visa has been approved biggrin.gif
And it took just 3 weeks! Just i guess if u push hard enough the waiting time can definitely be reduced.

Good Luck!

Why do people say you can't enter on a tourist visa then change it??? I came as a tourist, changed to an aupair, then now just changed to a work permit (half way through my aupair one so that is possible too)
