Does anyone have any ideas as to whether the ausländische Einkünfte on the German tax form should be entered in gross or net??

Many thanks in advance!

The Finanzamt. :s I can't find any information on whether this should be entered as gross or net...

I'm pretty sure it's gross, with the tax paid entered under Werbungskosten.

Don't forget to enter which country it's from as well.

Usually this would fall under a DBA (Doppelbesteuerungsabkommen) between Germany and the other country, which, as the name suggests, is aimed at avoiding paying tax at both ends.

You don't make any mention of what type of income it is. With a lot of countries, if you're not actually living there you should be able to get interest gross (after filling in the appropriate paperwork), meaning it should be taxed at this end (assuming your total income from interest etc. is more than the Freibetrag).

Also, I think the Finanzamt works on the principle that if it's possible to get the income tax-free from the other end then you are doing, so might not accept the Werbungskosten in that case or expect you to ask for the tax to be reimbursed by the other country.

Disclaimer: Please don't take my word for it, ask a tax expert or your friendly local Finanzbeamter.

There is one tax adviser quite well spoken of here at Toytown Munich, you might want to contact him if you want to have professional help (might be worth it), his name is Thomas Zitzelsberger.
