We want to go to Venice but have a pretty tight budget...can anyone recommend either hostels (with no age limit) or cheap hotels that are decent, have free rbeakfast, and are fairly easy to find?
Thanks!

I went there, it was a disappointment, get some good mosquito repellant. If you're American try priceline.com or look up some vacation rental on Google, I did this for Paris, I know a different place, but that is the best thing.

My colleague stayed in a youth hostel there and said it was fine, so just try searching Google to see which are available. iirc there were a couple but not in the same area.

Ok, well I was just wondering if anyone had some first hand experiences... kind of hard to get a real feel for the place just by their website.

I loved Venice the few times I have been there, I stayed at the nuns hostel, so that is no good for a couple. You could also stay in Verona, and take the train to Venice for a full day there.
Lets go and Lonely planet have great web pages with tons of information.

I booked it thru Let's Go (got the number from the web page there), it was awhile ago, so, I would suggest checking the web page for the new info (I don't have the information anymore- gave it to someone, and never got it back). There is about 30 beds in there, and its run by a group of nuns, its very cheap, but clean, and its just up the street from the main hostel on the island.

I'd recomend cross checking the rates and comments on www.hostelz.com and www.hostelworld.com

I stayed at the Casa Gerotto and Alloggi Calderan (Campo San Germemia 283) which is close-ish to the train station and super easy to find. It was cheap, clean, and had a nice bathroom. I stayed in the 6 bed dorm (no bunk beds which was nice). Unfortunately no breakfast, but not too too far from the grocery store...

Don't know how much money you have to spend, but staying on the Lido is an option. You go by vaporreto (boats of the public transport services) to Marcus square, takes you 20 minutes. Lido has its own beach too, I loved staying there. This place is very popular with tourists, I didn't stay there but walked past the building already. They have a special offer at the moment. I've been to Venice 5 times already, always at different times of the year. Depending on the time of year, you can pay very little or quite a lot. At the moment prices are relatively high(August is the most expensive) so their offer seems good.

I stayed at this hotel beginning of the year and can really recommend it. Prices depend on the type of room you pick, hold your mouse curser over the green fields. They offer a good breakfast and nice rooms (very small, but nice). It's also nice and quiet so one gets to sleep.

I think two days are too little, but if you only want to see the main tourist attractions or "do Venice" as one refers to it these days, you should be fine with two days.

If you stay on Lido and happen to come by a lonely looking lizard, please pm me afterwards. ph34r.gif
