Hello, I am pursuing a teaching certification/Master's degree in TESOL at a U.S. university. I am close to finishing my degree and must find a school in or near Munich where I can do my student teaching. The program is oriented toward international education and, as such, my student teaching must be conducted at an overseas, accredited school. Munich is the only location option because I'm moving there with my husband this fall. My professors and I have both contacted the major internaitonal (IBO) schools but they are reluctant to accept a student teacher. I am starting to panic because if I do not find a school, I will not be able to finish my degree and, trust me, I have not been doing this for fun:-) I can do my student teaching at any school so long as it is accredited by some type of authority--be it international, European, German, etc... Does anyone have any advice?

You might want to contact the international schools again. Persistence shows dedication. Suggest to the directors of the schools that you fill in for a leave of absence and have it count for student teaching. The department chair could serve as your mentor teacher since he/she has a lighter class load. This would save them money (free labor) and solve your problem! Good luck.

Can you speak German? If so, then try calling various German schools - Gymnasiums, etc. My boyfriend is a teacher at a school in Munich and there is a program called 'quereinsteig' or something like that - this program is for people who have Ph.Ds but want to get a teaching qualification - rather than starting over and doing the 6 year degree, they do it in 2 years. Anyway, my point with all that is if you call each school director and explain your situation, you might have some luck. You could compare it to this 'quereinsteig' program and see what they say. I think many places might not be interested, but it depends on the director of the school - and you only need one helpful person (supposedly they do exist). smile.gif Your best bet would be to search and find out where the bilingual schools (esp. Gymnasiums) are - they could use you, native speaker, as some kind of special extra that the other schools don't have. One thing to keep in mind however - there is a Fulbright program that sends over native speakers as language assistants, so some schools could already have a native speaker on site. But, just give it a try and don't get discouraged if some aren't helpful - there are a lot of schools in Munich and the surrounding area, so good luck!

I'm beginning to think I need to hire a translator just to find a list of schools in Munich. I've tried googling this in English to no avail. Thanks for your help!

Have you tried the European School Munich I don't know if they take student teachers but may be worth a try. Just be aware they have their half term holiday this week, back to school next Monday 21 May. smile.gif

Yes, my professor sent them a letter...no response yet.

Hi shanno,

I don't know how much this is applicable for you since I don't really understand if you are in a program looking for an oversea school, or if you are going to privately look for something? Normally, as a German (teacher), you have to pass a 2-year-student-teaching after the university exam called Staatsexamen/state exam.
I don't know how your German skills are, but you might want to contact the Bavarian School Ministry which is responsible for distributing student teachers around the schools in Bavaria- well, actually that's how it works for the teachers here. Here is the site from the Ministry which might also evaluate your university exam as fitting for the Referendariat, as we call it. At least they might be able to tell you where you can find private schools that take student teachers, though to my knowledge, only public schools are allowed to take student teachers/Referendare

it's only in German though.

Hope this helps!
