Help me choose a DVD to watch

I am sick of chick flicks

Every second week a friend and I meet to watch a dvd, have a chinese carryout and a bottle of wine. She always chooses the DVD and I have endured every chic flick from Bridget Jones to Pretty Woman. Last night I sat through series six of Sex and the City for the third time and indeed considered ending it all early this morning.

I have now drawn a line in the sand and we have agreed that I will choose the next DVD. The only proviso is that there should not be any blood, violence or death and to be honest I cannot think of any movie that fufils these criteria. Sweet Jesus, even Four Weddings and a Funeral had a death and I will not watch another movie with Hugh Grant in it (no offense to you Hugh Grant types).

So can any of you TTers come up with a suitable suggestion? And just before Parnell says anything Debbie Does Dallas is not an option.

Looking forward to some sensible replies blink.gif

how about The Fred Dibnah Collection [Box Set]
crazyme
I can suggest The Butterfly Effect, I really enjoyed this movie and I know my mates did too. It leaves you thinking and gives you plenty to discuss at the end of the movie, that's if you want!!?

"Little Miss Sunshine" has just come out on DVD. Does swearing count as violence?
Punchbear
Well that's Braindead an immediate non-runner.

If you can find it, The Red Balloon. Or Saving Grace. Or Smoke. Or Down By Law.
Sin
Have you seen Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil? Only one death, but it is kind of crucial to the plot. I can also highly recommend Big Night. Superb cinematography, but be warned, you're gonna be hungry by the end. Another great is Paris, Texas, or Withnail and I. I'm sure I could think of more.

i heart huckabees?
finding nemo
lilo and stitch
super troopers
curious george
blades of glory
?night at the museum?
anaylze this (i think there might be blood though...)
anger management
meet the parents/fockers
hitchhikers guide to the galaxy?
caddyshack

major league, revenge of the nerds, Ferris Bueller,

seriously, some blood or violence or something? doesn't have to be a gross war movie... pirates (1 or 2), dodgeball, shawshank redemption...
Will2Write
Women's movies that men can suffer:
The Wedding Crashers - something for everyone.
Love Actually - worth it for Rowan Atkinson's two-minute stint

Men's movies that women tolerate:
Twilight Samurai - surprisingly little violence and a human element to it (to keep the ladies happy)
Harry Potter and the Dungeon of Desire - 8th in the series and a very limited number of copies available (I can lend it to you)
the Boy From Bozlem
how about The Green Mile? yea, iknow he gets the chair at the end but most burds tend to like that film, failing that How about The Football Factory: What else you gonna do on a saturday?

I was going to suggest that one as well.

Garden State
The Science of Sleep

I just went through my DVD collection, but they are either chick flicks, or romantic comedies, or they have violence, so the output is a little sad. But if a little violence is okay, you may want to consider:

Maria Full of Grace
The Life of David Gale
Mariposa
Yeah, The Green Mile is a good one as well. smile.gif So is Crash but as far as I remember that one's a bit violent as well.

I also love Carlito's Way but I guess that is not an option.

Oh, and The Shawshank Redemption.
FuzzyTony
Chicks dig this popular guys movie:

Sin
The Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino is in the DVD shops now. Excellent production. Superb acting.
Panama
What about Good Will Hunting or A Beautiful Mind? Or Forrest Gump, Frida?
Mariposa
Pay It Forward is also good. It is a little sappy but a good movie and I wouldn't call it a chick flick.

And Oliver Twist.

Some good suggestions so far and quite a few I have not seen and had to google. Thanks for the offer W2W, I may take you up on that. Fred Dibnah certainly would be an improvement on Sex and The Ciy in my opinion.

She liked the Lord of the Rings trilogy so I thought an introduction to Star Wars might be appriopriate. I like Jaws myself but since she has pretty big teeth she might think I was taking the piss. Probably too much blood anyway.

Keep the suggestions coming.
Mariposa
Merry Christmas is also really good. It's a bit sappy but at the same time a war movie, so maybe that would work... I saw it with my ex and he loved it.
But maybe May is the wrong time to see that kind of movie, but then it has been cold and rainy outside. lol

Oh and Volver is also really good. It's an Almodovar but not that weird compared to some of his other movies.
mere
eww not Jaws. how kind of you to consider her teeth and jaws togethr.

star wars is definately a good idea. after that you could go on to Space Balls.
FuzzyTony
I agree with the suggestions for The Shawshank Redemption and The Merchant of Venice. Both wonderful movies.

And how about What Women Want, Chocolat, O Brother - Where Art Thou?, Intolerable Cruelty, Jerry Maguire, Sideways or Keeping Mum?

If she liked the Lord of the Rings trilogy she might like The Chronicles of Narnia too.

In the Mood For Love
Katze on a Hot Tin Roof
The Great Illusion
Magnolia

All in the Cinnemathek collection

There is also a death in this movie!
FuzzyTony
I just finished watching two gems in my collection tonight which I'm happy to recommend:

The Remains of the Day and The Thomas Crown Affair (1999 version). The 1968 version of The Thomas Crown Affair with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway is somewhat dated now, but the Pierce Brosnan & Rene Russo version is cool with a great soundtrack.
The Remains of the Day is a wonderful Merchant-Ivory production. But there is a brief appearance by Huge Grunt I'm afraid.

Well, that's my two cents.
FuzzyTony
So which movies did you & your girlfriend choose to watch, dude? unsure.gif
Did you both pick some good ones?
Pirulero
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind...does that have any deaths in it...not sure now...has got whats-her-faces beetle bonnet in it though...

@ Fuzzy Tony

Well we have not watched anything yet since I have shingles at the moment.

I wonder how she would react to being called my girlfriend since I am not aware of a German word that describes a girl you are mates with; come to think of it I cannot think of an English word either. Maybe she is sending me subliminal messages by getting me to watch all these girly movies that I have just not kopped onto upto this point.

In any case, I have chosen "The Last Butterfly" and I will report back how the viewing goes when we watch it.
sharpe
maybe her bf does not like these wussy movies and u are the only one around who bears them smile.gif
FuzzyTony
Oh, The Last Butterfly. Powerful film. Yep, I'll be keen to hear what you and your...erm...ladyfriend thought of it. happy.gif. Oh, and get well soon.
Batson Creek
Am I getting this right? You and a chick have a meal and a bottle of wine and watch a girly movie in a snuggle up on the sofa environment and you're not sure what the message is? Oh dear, is she your sister or something? If not have a think about what might be going on here.
dolfan
O brother where art thou, best movie in decades.
Eleanor Rigby
Great soundtrack too!
sarabyrd
Girlie-movie alert, contains George Clooney wub.gif But I agree as to quality.

Riddle me this, why do women so very love George Clooney? Is it the voice? The looks? The debonair carriage? The grey flecks? Or all of the aforementioned?

Funny you mention The Idiots, I watched that with my mother once. Imagine how odd that was.

All of the above plus his politics. And he's the right age!
