Spencer Tunick’s biggest photo shoot yet

Spencer Tunick makes his living convincing volunteers to get naked so he can photograph a sea of naked bodies.

He’s just organised his biggest photo shoot yet with 18,000 participants in Mexico city. This dwarves his pervious record of 7000 in Barcelona in 2003.



I actually participated in the Barcelona one. You are supposed to register online, and fill out a release form acknowledging that you are going to be photographed nude. However they had blank release forms, that you could fill out on the spot. You turn up at the location at the designated time, hand over your release form, and go into the congregation area.

Then you wait and wait. It’s perhaps a good idea to be dehydrated because in Barcelona there were limited toilet facilities for 7000 people. Then at 06:00 you’re given the order to strip. It’s quite an experience seeing 7000 people get naked in 30 seconds.

Then we all filed off to the photography location, where we were photographed in two positions: lying down, and on our hands and knees. In Mexico city the models were positioned standing upright and giving a military salute, then all lying down around a man also naked in a wheel chair. The two photos below are from Barcelona.



After 1 hour of this it all started to feel very natural, and you actually find the clothed martials a bit strange. Why are they being different and wearing clothes?

You might expect such an event to be full of voyeurs and perverts, however I found it all more normal than a day at the FKK beach. I’d say there’s an even mix between men and woman, and the ages range from children to people in their sixties. Children must have the release form signed by a parent or guardian.

The next Tunick shoot is in Amsterdam on the weekend of 2/3 June 2007. Might not be quite as warm and pleasant as Barcelona, I’ve no idea what happens if it rains.

Just goes to show that people are like sheep, they would not have done that as individuals but en mass then no problem. I see the fashion is not to shave your pubes in Mexico, I think that is disgusting.

Actually the photo where you can investigate the shavedness of their pubes is from Barcelona. I had never seen so much pubic hair before. Most people were unshaven. My guess is its only people who regularly go FKK who shave. Most of the participants in Barcelona were probably not regular nudists.

Some people prefer shaven, others don't, but its a bit over the top to describe it as disgusting.

So, if you all strip down and leave your clothes on the ground and file off to somewhere else...how do you find your clothes when you get back to the strip-off point?

You remember roughly where you left the clothes, and then hopefully you recognise your pile as you get back to the general area. Or you just wait till everbody else is dressed, and the unclaimed clothes must be yours. It is rather amusing watching naked people forlonly searching for their pile. When most people are dressed, they do look a bit forlorn and vulnerable, in contrast to finding clothed people rather strange during the mass nudity.

What an odd thing to say!
Until some years ago the norm was to have pubic hairs, but after being exposed to 'Sex & the city' and many porn films it seems now being natural is unnatural. I actually don't have any friends male or female that wax/shave completely, most of them British, some Latin, they think it is weird to.
No every one aims for the child prostitute/porn star look, nothing wrong with shaving/waxing but nothing wrong with not doing it either...By the way, is it only 'disgusting' in women? or Guys are supposed to be wax from head to toe as well? How many do you know that do?

Some men like women that are super hairy and others don't. I had an old roommate who used to shave everything off and her boyfriend liked it. However, I have heard many men say 'ew, I don't want to have sex with a women who looks like an 8 year old'.

I agree... I am neither for, nor against, but I find it odd that having pubic hairs is considered 'disgusting' nowadays...
Most people as far as I know keep some pubic hairs although they do 'trim' them, some only do the bikini line, etc. but I find it hard to believe that the norm is now to be completely hairless down there either for men or women.
Some do, but every one? And both sexes?
Or is it the case that only if you are a woman you must conform to the 'porn star' image to turn your bloke on, but if you are a guy you can be as hairy as a gorilla because after all who cares what women want anyway right?

I spent the first 18 years of my life desperate to see (female) pubic hair. So now whenever I see a naked woman, and she's shaved I feel somewhat cheated. That's not to say I'd kick her out of bed for being shaved.

I think the majority of men prefer women to be shaved, but there's a decent minority who prefer the natural look.

I'm sure more women than men shave. In fact until recently I'd have said that a man who shaves must be gay.

As I said I'm not against the 'all bared' look but I think calling 'disgusting' someone who has some pubic hair is extreme...
I think depends on the season and occasion, it isn't something permanent you can switch on/off as you wish...
summer frankly calls for shedding it all, never mind how it looks, it feels a lot fresher and cleaner but in winter the 'all waxed look' might not be quite so urgent...

I had the feeling that men who shaved their pubes were gay either because it was true, or it was my prejudice. I now know that its common for hetrosexual males to shave, and indeed have one hetrosexual male friend (with who I talk about that kind of thing) who does indeed shave, and keeps trying to convince me I should too because women like it better.

Regarding the beard, I wear one cos I think I have a face worth hiding, and hate shaving. I can honestly say I shave nowhere.

Well ... I suppose getting 18,000 people to strip simultaneously could indeed be described as pervi-ous. But no doubt he's impervious to such criticisms.

Were the Mexico participants mostly locals? The mass of bare flesh there looks a more appealing shade of tan than in the Barcelona pics, which somehow remind me of a display of freshly-plucked chickens at the butchers.

As for the see of naked bodies, is it really art or just shock value? I mean would there be any where near the same attention level if they were all clothed?

I don't think he's just doing it for shock value. I mean, who's going to be shocked at seeing a few (thousand) naked bodies these days?

I'd say it is thought-provoking art, because it shows nakedness from a different perspective and makes you question your attitudes towards it. And from MAM's account, taking part in such an event sounds like an interesting experience.

In my case, looking like a 'porn star' would be a total turnoff for my man. He likes them furry - I don't (like myself furry) - so we have reached a compromise

And, since I belong to a gym, I can say that furry women are definitely not in the minority here. I would say that all the different types are there (furry, bikini line, Brazilian, etc).

Shame that Tunick has managed to beat his previous 7,000 best. With the TT photographic competition in full swing and 13,000 TT Members, I had high hopes for a future Munich bid...

What I would love to organise is at the next mass strip is have secret cameras posted at the perimeter of the event and then have people steal all the participants clothes and then let the cameras roll. Watching a film of the ensuing mayhem would be hilarious and it would probably win an Oscar. Especially with all that disgusting masses of pubic hair.

I don't think that would be a good idea at all. I'm sure a lot of people who attend Spencer Tunick shoots are not naturally nudists, and after having the courage to strip off like that, playing such a dumb trick would be rather heartless. It would also be illegal, arguably pornographic, and most certainly would not win an Oscar.

Happily it could not happen, there are (clothed) martials watching over the discarded clothes at all times. While you could concievably steal one person's clothes, the martials would notice if you picked up more than one pile, or came back multiple times.

Finally pubic hair is not disgusting. Some (like me) like it, some prefer for it to be absent, but its natural, used to be normal 10 years ago, was not disgusting then, and isn't now.

The English speaking world is so hung-up about nudity it is unreal. Any night on American TV you can probably watch countless number of people getting shot and killed but Janet Jackson inadvertently shows one boob and the whole country is outraged. There is something not right with this.

Hey keydeck this one likes your humour – well if you like stodgy hairy pie you could be in there. I think she’s gagging for it, but you mustn’t be shaved she only likes men with long pubes. Let us know how you get on mate.
