From the 17th to the 20th of May the annual "Afrika Tage" returns for the fourth time. The African Days takes place on the Theresienwiese this year, the site of the world famous Oktoberfest, from 11am till 11pm.

The heart of this lively festival is the bazaar where you can find all sorts of artworks and hand-made items from all over Africa. You can also sample the delights of various African specialties, listen to music and enjoy dance performances. There is something offered for all the family including an African wedding on the opening day!

The main tent offers a varying programme each day:

Thursday, 17th May
- Mamadou & Perkussionmania (Burkina Faso)
- Kim Azas & Alafia African Reggae (Benin)

Friday, 18th May
- Tily Boo (Senegal)
- Wally Warning Roots Band (Alruba)

Saturday, 19th May
- Tintenfisch (Germany)
- Benny Okos and the Rapture Band (Nigeria)
- Kadero (Marocco)

Sunday, 20th May
- Martin Zobel & Soulrise (Germany)
- Hamjamadagascar (Madagascar)

You can purchase tickets in advance for all of these performances.

I've been to this a few times before and love browsing through the stalls. As tomorrow (17th) is a public holiday (and if it stays dry) I'll probably head over there in the afternoon (ca.14.30). Anyone want to join me? If so, post or PM and we can arrange to meet up first.
phillyrapster
Hi i am totally new to this area what is the easiest way to get to this festival can i take subway etc
UrbanAngel
Yeah the best is to take the subway to Theresienwiese (U4/5).
Kat
I'd love to do this tomorrow as well. Shall we meet at the Theresienwiese U-Bahn station at 14:30?
zee
Here is the program, and it's not for free: 4 € entrance fee.
Kat
Seems the live music shows don't start until 17:00. I'll be surprised if entrance to the bazaars are not free. Usually, you only pay to enter the performance tents.
zee
From the website: The entrance allows you to visit the festival area, the music program and to take part at various activities, it also includes the MVV-ticket.

QUOTE

Edit: I've been on Theresienwiese today, there is a fence around the festival, so they really make you pay, but it's not too expensive after all and 50 Cents go to charity (AIDS-project).
Kat
Well €4.- isn't much at all, considering you get live music in the deal.
madgibson
Used to be free to go round the stalls but now it is €4 which I think is ok as there is music etc going on too.

@Kat
Sure thing - we'll meet as you say at the exit of the U4/5 Theresiensiese at 14.30

...maybe Phillyrapster might like to tag along aswell as he is new to Munich. Anyone else feel free to join us - the more the merrier! Heard the weather is not going to be good so will keep my fingers crossed that they got it wrong.
madgibson
Just read in the programme that there will be an African wedding taking place at 15.00 by the Bavaria statue...sounds interesting.
madgibson
Due to the bad weather we'll give this a miss...maybe try again for Sunday afternoon at the same time if anyone is still interested?
madgibson
Just to confirm that I'm rescheduling this for Sunday 20th May at 14.30 at exit of U4/5 Theresienwiese, If you'd like to come along, post or PM so we know who to look out for.
GreenTea
I braved the elements and went there yesterday. Worth a visit, lots of interesting food to try out, and the tent with the art exhibition just by the entrance on the left is also worth a look. Concerts are in the large tent at the southern end.

Important: if it's raining, wear waterproof footwear - best would be wellies - because large parts of the festival area were seriously waterlogged yesterday. Even if it doesn't rain again, it may still be muddy for a day or two, so don't wear your fanciest city shoes.
madgibson
Thanks for the tip Green Tea..I know how muddy it gets there and I don't possess wellies...that's why I chickened out yesterday...hope the sun today and tomorrow dries it up sufficiently for Sunday.
Keydeck
Some photos in the gallery now.
madgibson
Great pics Keydeck! Hope the weather stays the way it was today for our foray into Africa tomorrow!

See post #13 for meeting point/time for those who'd like to join tomorrow.
