Just wondering if there are any fellow bookcrossers on this site.

I am a member but never actually participated. unsure.gif

I appreciate that if anyone knows what you are referring to they might mention it, but for those of us who haven't a clue what you are on about you might give a little more detail.

Keydeck and all others who haven't a clue: http://www.bookcrossing.com/

Basically you leave a book in a place, then notify the site of where you left it and someone else who lives in the city can pick it up, read it, and then leave it somewhere again. Kind of a nice concept, but I could not be bothered to go look for a book from there so far.

Ach... do what i do and rip the last page out before you return a book wink.gif

BookCrossing is defined as "the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise". The term is derived from bookcrossing.com, a free online book club which began and encouraged the practice.

Sounds like an ingenious way of getting rid of unwanted crap without the bother of finding the nearest bin. "Oh, I was just leaving it here for someone else's benefit, honest!"

Cue that guy from Hamburg with his second-hand book rants... ph34r.gif

Well done kids for looking it up. I could have done likewise but simply can't be arsed. If you wanna post something then at least have the courtesy to provide information about what you are posting about. It's in your own interests.
Mariposa
Well, technically bevalisch was asking if anyone else was a bookcrosser. If you do not know what it is, that means you are not a member, therefore her question is answered either way. wink.gif

The DAI (Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut) in Heidelberg does something similar to this bookcrossing. They have a shelf where you can put a book you don't want any more and exchange it for another one that someone else put on that shelf. And it's not just all crappy books either.
the Boy From Bozlem
this concept would work with porn... Right? unsure.gif
Mariposa
I am sure it would... if you wanna open a business like that for porn, I suggest you call it porncrossing. wink.gif
the Boy From Bozlem
Well I guess the good old excuse of... “it’s not mine, honest. I don’t know how it got there would work biggrin.gif
Mariposa
Make that your business slogan, "ever wanted to use the excuse that it's not yours and you have no clue how it got there, without lying? we have the solution for you."
Uncle Nick
Somebody left a plastic bag with 4 books in it at the last curry night - does that make them a bookcrosser?
Mariposa
Either than or a forgetful person. wink.gif

Bookcrossing books have a note in them with a number and everything (because they want to track the books, where it travels and stuff).

@Mariposa: so, it's a bit like Shaun the Sheep, but with books?

Edit: do you take photos of the book at the place you left it?
Mariposa
Yes, like Shaun the sheep and all his non-identical clones...

Sorry, I didn't even think about saying what bookcrossing is. The originally question was whether anyone here is a bookcrosser and those people would know what I was talking about, but I still need to get used to Toytown (having only joined yesterday) so I'm sorry if this was wrong.

Personally I think bookcrossing is a much better way of getting read of unwanted books than just throwing them away. I love books and reading so it seems shame to me to waste them by throwing them in the bin when there are so many people out there who might actually get some enjoyment out of them. Also, there is an OBCZ (official bookcrossing zone) near me. That's a place where people are officially allowed to leave bookcrossing books for other members to find - in this case it's a cafe in Karlsruhe. I go there quite often to see if there are any interesting books that I might want to read. Like I said, I love reading and right now I can't afford to buy any books so for me bookcrossing is a great way to find fresh reading materieal, and to pick up books that I wouldn't even bother to look at if I went to a library or something.

I'm a member! I haven't actually dropped or picked up any books yet, I live in Tuebingen and I get about 10 emails per day about books dropped. The only problem is when nobody knows where the location of the book actually is haha

I saw a book in a bus stop here in Düss not so long back, didn't want to take it though incase someone jumped out or something at me! Reading up on bookcrossing though makes it sound like maybe that book was for that purpose. Oh well, now I shall keep my eyes peeled for books biggrin.gif
