Blasewitz district of Dresden - Germany

Info and opinions on living there
RDW
I'm new here at TT, and haven't arrived yet in Dresden. I was wondering if anyone out there knows the Blazewitz section of Dresden. Is it safe? Are there grocery stores?, cinemas? video (DVD) rental stores in the area? Is it a good place to ride a bike, or is there too much traffic? Is there a subway ( Ubann) station near Wittenberger Strasse? Are there subways over there, or only trolleys? (above ground) I won't have a car in Germany and plan to buy a bicycle. I'm just wondering how difficult it will be to get around the city.

Oops! Forgot to say please and thank you. rolleyes.gif

the public transport is pretty good here (i dont htink there is a u bahn) it is pretty safe to ride a bike everywhere and it is extreamly safe in europe in my opinion. much safer than in the USA.
also shoping is easy there are always shops but some things from america are missing. mostly only things that kill you so it will be ok. ohh what i would pay for some butter milk biskets and a bit of good bob evans sausage for biskets and gravy.

Hello RDW,

Blasewitz is a good part of Dresden. However, the best parts of the city is to the north of the river. (Neustadt, Loschwitz etc)
Nevertheless, if you get hold of an apartment overlooking the river/Castle Eckberg, that would be awesome. Ofcourse, the noise levels could be a touch high, but the superb views plus the proximity to the Bicycle path along the River Elbe will more than make up for the noise.
Supermarkets are aplenty all over Dresden..not sure about DVD rentals, but would expect a few in that area. Close to Wittenberger strasse is a cinema hall.

There isn't a sub-way system in DD and actually, there is no need for one. The Tram and bus system is fantastic and if you throw a bicycle into the mix, you can easily get around the city. I checked on the Deutsche Bahn website and there is a tram station, which is a few minutes walk from the wittenbergerstr stop. Depending on where exactly you will be based on that long street, you might need an additional bus ride to get to the tram station

If you are an enthusiastic/frequent biker, biking along the Elbe upto the Sachsische Schweiz will be extremely tempting and worth your while.

Have fun,
Sudhi

Thanks, Sudhi,
I looked up the Cinemax theatre..and saw some American movies..does that mean they are in English and dubbed in German? Or are they just in English?

you can rent DVDs all over but they prices are higher, in my opinion, than in the USA. The have hollywood movies in german normally. if you see ov or of after the movie then it is in original langauge.

Hi Straker! I just bought a Macbookpro to bring with me. I've loaded all the music cds I own and Im hoping I can watch TV shows and movies on it the way I can now. At least ntil I can find my way around the city. My son wants me to find some guys he can go to the bars with while he is visiting- are you interested? He wants to meet someone who knows the best places.

when i am not working i can go out. I dont know if i know the best places. but the best area is neustadt there is something for everyone there. So even if he does not like me it is not hard to find a fun crowed and if he is so into parting then i geuss he will make friends fast. I am a bit more closed so i may not be as fun. I like a drink in a pub where i can still think not with music so loud it shakes my eyes
note about the tv. sites like abc dont let you view the show outside of the USA

Hi RDW,
I plan to rent somewhere at Blazewitz because my friend recommended there. Do you use an estate agent?
