1&1 Pocket Web - a Blueberry-like PDA gizmo

User reviews, anyone here use one?

It seems a fair enough deal: 1&1 and Vodafone will sell you a pocketweb, PDA—Blueberry (blackberry— Sorry I am from Maine) tongue.gif like device, that allows you to send and receive emails and surf the web anywhere in Germany for 9.99 a month (plus set up fees). Has anyone taken 1&1 up on this offer? How fast and reliable is the gizmo?

Thanks for any advice.

Slow (GPRS only) , poor display, small keys, poor build quality, regular software crashes, poor user interface, only 2.5-3 hours battery life in regular use, not good as a phone unless you have a bluetooth headset, and then expensive to use, so really a second device for your pocket. Otherwise it does what it says on the packet.

In other words, not a real competitor to the berries, and in a world where data rates are increasing, equipment is improving and network charges are dropping like a stone, ask yourself if you want to be locked in to an entry-level device for 2 years.

Not a bad deal though seeing as you get flat rate internet and email with it..

Thought as much. Thanks. Any alternatives?

"Flatrate" up to how many MB's (Hidden Caps)

Besides the things YL6 mentioned, why would you lock yourself into a non-hackable, non-standard OS/Device.
If you want the features of a BLACKberry, then get a blackberry instead of a cheap knockoff..

Seems as though there is no limit on transfers?

No providers make public their hidden caps.. They just cut you off or over charge you..
Hutcho
I don't know that they would overcharge you. Cutting you off is a definite possibility though..

For limited use, for 2 years, it works...

I check Vodafone's website to see if I could get the same package, with a better blackberry device. Funny enough, they don't offer such a package (only through 1&1). Does any one have a blackberry (portable emails and surfing) package that is this cheap?
YorkshireLad6
The business model for the 1&1 Pocketweb is based on the fact that usage is so restricted, and the hardware so poor that people won't really exercise the flat rate transfer. It's not meant for downloading documents or large datafiles, so will rarely exceed 30Mb/month. Funnily enough this equates to the Vodafone "Volume PDA" package at €9.95 per month. As a bulk re-seller 1&1 probably pay around 70-80% of this to Vodafone, cream the rest off themselves and share the risk with Vodafone that few if anyone will exceed 30Mb

Thanks again YL6. I'll take my time on this.
