Where I think the EU is headed

Resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire

In many ways the European Union is coming together on an unprecedented pace and depth, for centuries Europe has been divided, not since the time of Charlemagne has Europe been united. In many ways the EU is turning into a modern day Holy Roman Empire. The ascendancy of Josef Razinger, a very conservative Pope, much different than his predecessor seems to point to this. Rising Islamophobia and the threat of terrorism is another factor. Also the increasing tendency of Europeans to move the political Right. Where is the Bavarian, Edmund Stoiber? He will soon make a reappearance into the limelight of German politics, in many ways he is the European equivalent of George W Bush.

?!?!? Do what guv'nor? Bloody europe politics is all about middley middleness. The right is now the centre, so is the left. Moving towards the political right? Not really.

Good thing Ratzinger is bringing back the Latin mass, including the bit about the jews living in "blindness" and "darkness"
Between him and Meisner in Cologne, the middle ages are coming back with a vengence.

Yeah, for example I am living in blindness and darkness and my place in hell is already reserved. Duh.

Second Level of Hell

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You have come to a place mute of all light, where the wind bellows as the sea does in a tempest. This is the realm where the lustful spend eternity. Here, sinners are blown around endlessly by the unforgiving winds of unquenchable desire as punishment for their transgressions. The infernal hurricane that never rests hurtles the spirits onward in its rapine, whirling them round, and smiting, it molests them. You have betrayed reason at the behest of your appetite for pleasure, and so here you are doomed to remain. Cleopatra and Helen of Troy are two that share in your fate.

stuff

I agree that the EU is pretty much a new version of the HRE, which is all good as I think the HRE was a power for good in Europe, certainly for the German microstates. I can't agree with the swing to the right though.

Edit: Also want to say that the article is a load of bollox.

three cheers for the HRE! I am all for serfdom. I cannot find a parking spot in my neighbourhood because of all these damn plebs with 0% financed cars.
Besides, that way we could get the mirrors cleaned for free!

I dont get what you are trying to imply by that statement. And, it looks like a total vomit of a post of everything that's been posted today. Weird.

And that's bad because?

Not since the time of Charlemagne has Europe been united.

Not by popular and at least quasi-democratic decision. You kinda missed that detail.

Yes, we've got popes running everything, countries being divided up and re-parceled to the heirs of the the dead pope, groups of kings elected by dukes fighting it out among themselves. Very nostalgic,

The ascendancy of Josef Razinger, a very conservative Pope, much different than his predecessor seems to point to this.

It has fuck-all to do with it. Ratzinger was brought in as an interim pope. He's a conservative guy who can help get people's minds off Wojtyła before dying soon and making room for the next pope who won't have to walk in JP2's shadow.

Rising Islamophobia

Nothing rising. It's competing and refuses to accept a number of Western principles. It will always clash unless Europe goes completely dhimmi, rather unlikely.

and the threat of terrorism

Blah blah blah. Europe had a couple decades of real terrorism. This shit's nothing compared to the 1970s and 1980s. The only difference is that now people are happy to run from their own shadows and be giant pussies instead of flipping the terrorists a collective bird and telling them to fuck off. This time the terrorists won because everyone decided to be a fucking pussy.

Also the increasing tendency of Europeans to move the political Right.

Define "right". Before you do read up on the current French election. The fucking CSU/CDU is further to the left than the fucking Democrats in the US. Of fucking course the countries in Eastern Europe are going to vote "right"; they've been suffering under what's ostensibly "left" for the past 60-some fucking years! They'll find a happy middle, save for the über-Catholic righter-than-the-rightest-tip-of-the-right-wing Poles.

Gone. History. Had Merkel made a bodge job of it you could ask that question. She didn't, you can't, end of story.

Left or right all depends on where the center is located. The EU center is moving a bit to the right, but it is still far far left of the US center. Just for a bit of perspective mind.

This kinda stuff is why I don't "do" politics.

Islamophobia??? In Europe???!!! Please, Muslims are everywhere here, the only places where merely being a Muslim would place you under severe suspicion would be the US, Israel, and Australia. Islamophobia is not present in an instutional form, the last time I heard Sweden gave 20,000 Iraqis refugee visas, Sweden has only about 8 million people, the US at the same time only granted 700, which is a big difference, especially considering that the US had a population of over 300 million. Iraq is only one Muslim country where Sweden gets Muslims, so probably a 100,000 or more people from Muslim countries migrate there. Sweden isn't the only European country with large scale Muslim immigration(why only Muslims? What about Indians and Chinese?), there are over 7 million Muslims in France, well over 3.5 million in Germany, nearly 1 million in the Netherlands, and many in Britain. Europe keeps taking refugees left and right. Not all countries are this welcoming. Go to Australia and tell them you are a refugee(especially from a Muslim country) and they will put you in a small prison cell in the middle of nowhere while they determine whether or not you are going to be a problem for them, Asians from more progressive countries like China and India are allowed in though with fewer headaches, they happen to be the fastest growing groups there, but it seems to be an issue of money, Asia=Money for Australia.

There is a big problem with your Holy Roman Empire theory, there is no European Constitution binding the nations together, many countries still have differing foreign policies, and Europe is not as integrated as you think, people from the newer EU states are still restricted from working in the more wealthy older Western states. Also Europe is facing a big problem with an aging population, people are not having children( so the employment prospects in my profession are very bleak), they need immigrants, but the ones that are here aren't really going to become permanent residents, they just want to earn some money and then go home. There is also still of a lot ethnic bias among Northern Europeans towards people from Southern and Eastern European countries(I remember a German shopkeeper being interviewed on DW about his opinion on the Euro and he said it was introduced to help the lazy Greeks, Spaniards, and Italians), so there is very little in the way of unity. Only the financial system is unified.

If you told me China and India are going to become the major challengers to US supremacy, it is extremely plausible, still China is at least 15 years away from being considered a developed nation, India will still need another 25 years before it can be considered to have a good living standard. They are both going to make a major impact on those of us who live in the West, meaning we will work a lot harder in order to compete with these Asian countries.
