Bank deposits by mail into a German bank

Is this possible? And if so, how?

OK, trying to find out some info for a friend who has recently moved back to the U.S. She got a refund check from Deutsche Telekom in EURO that she wants to deposit to her German bank account. But, she is not sure how to do this?
I'm not sure which bank she has - possibly HypoVB - I'm not sure if this matters either.

Is it as simple as endorsing the check on the back and writing your account number on it and sending it to the bank?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Perhaps it's easier sending the cheque back to Deutsche Telekom and asking them to (credit) transfer it to her account with whichever bank she still has her account. Just a thought.

There must be a way to do it. I was thinking to myself 'why did DT not ask her which bank account to transfer the refund to when she closed her DT account'.

I've put money in and done transfers by post (my bank in Germany was in the North whilst I lived in FFM).

i think it should be possible. there should be some "berater" or contact person at the bank responsible for your friend's account. i think the best is to get in touch with that person, then write a brief note and sign it saying you want the check deposited. it might be a bit tedious but i'm pretty sure it works.

Rilana - did you have a deposit slip or something? Or did you just sign it, put a note on it and stick it in an envelop?

Well, here is the other option. Tell your friend to write a short, informal letter asking her bank to have the amount on the cheque credited to her account. The letter will count as the "Scheckeinreichungsformular". She should send the letter together with the cheque to the branch of her bank here in Germany. If it's an "Orderscheck" she has to endorse it by signing her signature on the back. This isn't necessary if it's a "Verrechnungsscheck" - but it can't hurt if she signs it anyway. That should definately work, unless the letter gets lost. Best is she sends it as a registered (certified) letter.

I just popped it in to an envelope with a note with my details on asking for it to be deposited. I sent it to my branch...was no problem! smile.gif
