Yes it's that time of year again when the chilli makers start bringing out their secret recipes to slaughter the other competitors with.
The date is
2pm Saturday 14th of July. So get out your pots and pans and start thinking of great ways to impress the judges with your own truly unique blend of chili.
This year's chili cookoff will take place at
The Zar Bar - the bar previously know as "Zic Zac", undoubtedly the best location we've had so far.
Address is
Rosenheimerstrasse 240, Munich-Ramersdorf. See
Google Map.
So start dusting off the stetson and boots, and think "tex'n" thoughts.
We are heading for a good hoedown this year and need as much support as possible.
Full details on the website:
www.chilicookoff.deIf you would like to have up to the minute information about this event, please send your e-mail address to loonyspook@hotmail.com and I will make sure that as more information regarding this competition comes out you will receive it.
See y'all there.

Where's Brandon and Sub Ether Radio? And the link to the website:

Hey Gen and everyone else...Brandon and Co. are alive and kicking...currently being held hostage by us...the more people who turn up, the more chance of us letting him go...
No seriously folks...Brandon is moving on to pastures new...he's here for a little while longer and will do the main sorting out...but he's handing the flag on to me to carry for a while...
and YES...the British are coming...So we will be spelling colour...(note with the U) and lever will be pronounced Leeeeeever

Well no matter how we spell it, someone out there has a chance to take away a great big (It really is isn't it) trohpy, along with all the wonderful bragging rights (especially here) associated with that.

Chili is like Solyanka. It is a kitchen artist's creation. When I make what I call Fiesta Chili, then it has corn in it. I tried mushrooms once and I will never ever do that again. It just doesn't fit the notion of "chili".
Will this competition be a blind one?
What is the theme of this chili cook-off?
Who are the judges and what is their nationalities?
Loonyspook
May 5 2007, 3:39 pm
Questions answered...
1) Yes this will be a blind cookoff... for further information see
http://www.chilicookoff.de/ for judging rules.
2) The theme of the Cookoff is Texan, or anything South Western States I would guess...(though most people just adopt a slight tilt towards alcoholism and fiery breath)
3) The Judges (who will remain anonymous till judging time to AVOID bribery and or blackmail of the extreme type) will be of several nationalities, including one bonifide Texan...
Loonyspook
May 5 2007, 3:42 pm
Oh and on the whole Solyanka issue...please don't put pickled cucumbers in your Chili.
eurovol
May 5 2007, 4:20 pm
I would put olives or pickles or cinnamon in my chili before I would put a mushroom in there. When and if you want fiery hot and I mean burn baby burn hot, then you gotsta balance it out with something distinctive. That is part of the art of cooking. I just want to know that if I enter this thing, what is my target taster audience and their expectations?
PS: Can we enter as a group as well as an individual?

Or no, there's no prize and the reward will be the good karma that comes with feeding lots of people??

Not suggesting we break anything, but in the name of continuous improvement, I have a couple of suggestions.
How about:
Chili minimum size 1 liter.
Those who don't bring a chili pay.
Those who bring a chili don't pay.
I find it rather curious that the cooks pay money, and the guests just got to eat.

Last year the chilis were eaten up in minutes.

Jun 10 2007, 11:45 pm
I agree with you except for the minimum size bit. Thing is, everyone wants to try the winning chili. Tough shit, there's not gonna be enough to feed everyone. The way I see it is simple. Bring chili...judge's judge...cooks get first taster for the cooks prize...whoever's in the queue gets next shot. Setting a minimum size, even though 1 litre is pretty small anyway, is crap. As in previous years, I will cook a pot of chili, it'll be bigger than some and smaller than others. Give me a minimum quantity restriction and I simply won't bother my arse. I'm not entering to feed the masses, I'm entering to win the competition. Oh, someone didn't get to try any of the chilis, boo fucking hoo. Get up off your fat arse and get into the queue earlier. No, if there's a size limit on the competition then I'm out. Simple as that. It's a chili competition, the only people who matter are the judges, anyone else who gets to try some is a bonus.
But you're absolutely right, people entering a chili shouldn't have to pay.

Dont even entertain the idea of a minimum amount. The last 3 years have been great fun and I've never seen anyone submit anthing that could be considered a small amount. The simple fact is that it gets eaten and quickly. I guarantee you that this year there will not be enough chili to serve everyone. Yes the chili entries should pay, its all a bit of fun and it all goes towards making the final prize money better. If we get 20 entries at 5eur a pop, thats 100eur that would be shy in the prize money. Call me selfish, but I'd like to see the winner get a decent prize.
If the cook off is going to start getting finicky over small details, then I wont bother this year.

@ Chili Twister, Please read both Keydeck and 3 Lions comments about the Prize money.
To Keydeck and 3 Lions, thanks for keeping this SANE. This is a local FUN contest with the idea of having a good time behind it.
The organisers will NOT be forcing a minimum Chili size. The Cooks are always as generous as their largest Cooking pot by the looks of it.
As far as entrance fees goes, the 10 Euros in the (Chili) pot is for the winner, etc. Plain and simple.
To those who come along, the cost of 5 Euros to watch the event (normally to support some friend who enters) is MINIMAL, and soon it will have to rise. WHY.??? Because the cost of organising the event increases in the same way everything else does in life.
What do you get for your 5 Euros..?
At the very least, you get the chance to listen to 2 Live Bands and apart from MAJOR events those are NEVER FREE.
Who pays for it.? You and your entrance fee.
The fact that it has been possible to have Chili also is a bonus and I am convinced that if we started Charging for a chance to taste the winning Chili there would be a LOT of complaints here.
This will remain a FUN event, the organisers will KEEP on trying to do their best, please support us by NOT getting picky as this puts people off coming along and will have a VERY negative effect on this event.

Keydeck's and 3 Lion's threats seem more insane than someone making some suggestions to entice more participation by contestants and spectators alike. In fact, reading through the thread those same suggestions turn up over and over again. I smell a conspiracy con carne or bad chili or something.

PS: I will be coming along, bringing a few peeps with me and we will be entering a few
pots of evil stuff!

It's not a threat you daft numpty, it's a statement of fact. Anyway, I've thought a bit more about it and I retract what I said about the entry fee. I've no issues with it, for attendees and entrants alike. Am looking forward to the day. Tis always a lot of fun.

Hey all, Brandon here... So, I'm happy to see that the Chili Cookoff has its share of discussion and better yet, controversy. It wouldn't be the same without it!
Some fantastic news about this year's event is: We have one of the best bands in Munich playing this year. I won't reveal their name yet, but I will give you a hint. The singer is Australian and the band have played both Amnesty International's "Make Some Noise" and "The Adventure Club" in
Substanz. Although they are not normally a country band (their own stuff is truly exceptional, if you like them at the cookoff, go see them live elsewhere), they will be playing both kinds of music, Country AND Western at our event.
The event's really coming together nicely this year and we have a great charity for which we're raising money, KlinikClowns (
http://www.klinikclowns.de). You certainly won't want to miss it!!

I was just reading the cookoff rules and have a question. The chilli is judged on 'Red Color'- does this mean that for a chilli to be eligible it must in fact be red?
