Hello All,
Do you find it a problem like myself to hand wash your car in Munich City? I really find it inconveinient and have had to resort to the expensive coin-op car wash.
What do all you guys do...do you use coin-op car washes, how much are you paying on average?
Cheers all,
Arif

What do you mean by expensive? You can find car washes as cheap as 4.20 euros in Munich(there is one in inglostäterstr. north of
frankfurter ring). Or using manual washes for 1 euro. I use the first one.

I have a great car wash not far way on Allacher Strasse just accross the railway brigde, a manual with powered jet wash for a few Euros (usually find 3 Euros is enough) or go through the automatic car wash, costs a bit more!
The first time I washed my car by hand in Germany it was on a Sunday, I was curtly told off that we don't wash our cars on Sunday!

Am I right in thinking that washing your car in your drive way is still prohibited? I know that Sundays are a bit bizarre, with all sorts of social rules that apply, but what about the rest of the week?

Yes, it's been "verboten" for several years now. It's not so much a "Sunday thing" but an "environmental thing". Private car washing is not good for the environment and, if you use bog-standard household cleaning agents (even biodegradable ones!), it's often not good for your car either as you cold be stripping wax from the finish or even scratching the paintwork if your detergent is slightly abrasive. This, added to all the rest of the dirt and gunk you wash off (e.g. oil, grease, chemicals, lead, silicone residue), gets washed into the ground or the storm drains unfiltered. Generally, water from storm drains does not undergo treatment but is released directly into rivers & lakes. Even at a water treatment plant, the pollutants in car-wash water cannot be broken down easily anyway and pollutant residue would contaminate the water. A professional car wash place will have the appropriate drainage installed to ensure that pollutants don't end up in the local sewer system or that the water is filtered and recycled.
Sometimes the Germans have good reasons for their bizarre rules!
