Hi there,

New to the boards and new to Munich. Hope this is the right place for this post.

I moved to Munich a couple of weeks ago for work on a whim (from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). Found a lot of Chinese places (I live around the Marienplatz area), but I was wondering if there are any good Vietnamese places around me that serve pho? If so, I would give my right arm for some. I love the stuff.

Thanks in advance!
Wilson
Keydeck
Cam-Ly has it on their menu.

I'm not sure if they serve pho, but there's a good Vietnamese restaurant in the Glockenbachviertel at Ickstattstr 26 called Kirschblüte. You could always call and ask - the menu changes.

There's a great little Vietmamese imbiss near the Josephsplatz U-Bahn which, if I recall correctly, serves Pho

Ooooooooooo, and I should mention that I don't speak a lick of deutsch. I'm supposed to start taking deutsch lessons soon, but until then I'm resorting to smiling and pointing. A lot of danke's and bitte's. heh.

There's a place in between the Josephsplatz and Theriesenst. ubahn stations (if you go to T, come out at Augestinerstrasse and head north, from J do the same but head south). It's called Hanoi and their Pho is wicked depending on the cook (as in when the regular cook is on hols it's average). On the menu it's noodle soup with chicken or beef but if you don't speak German just ask for the Pho. Ga or whatever and they'll make it for you. If you like it like they do, ask for hot (scharf) and they'll hurt you. smile.gif Oh and don't expect good service as the waiter there is probably the grumpiest man I've ever met. I've been a regular there for the last two years and have gotten a smile out of him maybe 5 times. I choose to find it funny.

I could sure go for a bowl of that. The Josephsplatz place sounds promising. Do any places in Munich offer it with tripe? I had a bowl at the place in Shrannenhalle but it was really awful. The broth was pure MSG, no aromatics.

I make "fakey-pho" sometimes when I need a fix. Char a quartered onion, a hunk of ginger and some garlic, then simmer in decent chicken broth with a couple pods of star anise. Fish the solids out, then add noodles, and at the end the thin-sliced beef. Bean spouts, thin sliced onions and basil on the side. Very quick, very good. Actually I can't take credit, I got it out of this book: link.

There is a Vietnamese place on Ismaningerstr called Tha Long, I have never been, but heard they do the soups.

okay, I've been on a man-hunt for the stuff and for some weird reason the only pho on the menus in this place are ridiculously small!! I'm talking like a single serving, tiny-bowl-of-soup small!

In Canada, you can get HUGE bowls of pho for like, I dunno, $8CND (about 4-5 times the size of a single serving). Here, if you ask for a big bowl of pho, they'll just slap two small bowls together and charge you double the price -€10-12.

I've went to Cam Ly, Co Do and some Japanese place by Isartor (next door to that Wok and Roll place) and all of them have super small servings.

Is there a dedicated pho house that serves the meal-sized portions? I'm coming close to desperate.

welcome to Germany! Portions here are different than back home.

I've been to a few of the Vietnamese places in town. Coriander is my fav. so far. It's in North Schwabing by the Tengleman on Nordend or Barer Strasse. Also a good place on Lindwurmer just before it started heading up the little hill to Harras. I can't remember the name though. Both serve some version of Pho and the one on Lindwurmer has Vietnamese coffee as well. Although, without ice. Enjoy!

There is an asian shop at Haderner Stern that sells this soup at lunch time. I've never tried it. So don't know if they have large portions or not. But they do have a rather large sign outside saying they have the soup and it is one of the few things they make to serve at lunch ...so it is possible that they might serve it in big bowls.
