Just read about the Lyrid meteor shower and I was thinking I might try to get out there and watch it.

I was thinking of driving out to the middle of nowhere in the wee hours on Saturday night/Sunday morning, put the top down, wrap up warm and just stare at the sky if it's clear enough.

Any tips from anyone? Will anyone else be going to watch this?

I have never driven out anywhere, but have done following(without success) to try to see them:
  • climbed up scaffolding of tall building and sat on top staring for hours, getting a stiff neck and freezing my arse off.
  • searched for darkest spot in English Garden to look for them(getting a stiff neck after a few hours and freezing my arse off)
  • Gone up hill in city to look for them(gasnafmyo)
I have never been able to see them, the Perseids or the Leonids. sad.gif I have been trying for years already. It was always too cloudy or too light in the city.

I'll leave the car heaters on full and hope for the best then smile.gif

Well just came in after 30 mins outside.

I saw one long trail from left to right across my field of view. at 11.50pm. Need to ask on the foura if this was a Lyrid. Quite nice meteor.

Went out at about 2:30 am Sunday morning. Saw five, maybe six meteors over the course of an hour, most of them near Vega.

Best meteor shower I've seen was Leonids in 1999.

I went out, but I am not sure if I saw any meteors. I think I saw satellites, but cannot be sure. How do you tell the difference? I really dunno how much satellite traffic I should be seeing up there.
jeremy
Prijks - the Leonids were excellent that year. I also saw a few then whenn living in Saudi.

Tom - check out www.heavensabove.com by Chris Peat. Contains all you need to spot satellites and what are known as Irridium flares. I can send you more software progs if you want. PM me.
