Ryan Air plans transatlantic flights

Really cheap fares to the U.S.

Well seems that Ryan Air now want to start cheapo flights to the US starting at around €7, though they will be considerably higher after taxes.

So would you fly Ryan Air to the US?

Some folk might be interested in Globespan and their North American fares.

O'Leary would probably charge people to use the loo - I am a huge admirer of the man's chutzpah, it must be said.

Shudder shudder!

No. The thought of a full load of passengers on a Boeing 747 running for their seats after being bussed across to the plane is hilarious. Will their airports be anywhere near their stated destinations? (Frankfurt which is now Frankfurt/Hann) springs to mind.
NOFXmike
I've used the shitter ONE time on a plane ever...and I've flown across the atlantic many times...I rarely get up, and can keep myself entertained with a book.

So fuck yeah, I'd go cheapo airline acorss the atlantic...I've visited family TWICE in 4 years...it's just too damn expensive atm.
Lassie
they better keep doctors aboard as there'll be a sharp increase in DVT with people sitting for hours in seats with like 28inches pitch or whatever they give you.
NOFXmike
I have no idea what you just wrote, Lassie, but I'm guessing you're referring to the width of the seats? My skinny ass will fit on anything they can come up with.
Katrina
So for shortarsed types armed with colostomy bags, it is a steal then? Pitch is the measure from front to back of the seat, being skinny won't help, being short will.
And no fluids on board, he'll make another fortune.
The routes will get pulled as soon as that gets lifted, O'Leary does nothing for free.

at the Milwaukee airport I saw something about Ryan Air, but I cannot remember what it was
Deccie
Probably be "bunk seats" not any more window or aisle, but also top/Bottom. as there will be no carry on allowed, hence no need for the over head lockers. Cram them in.
Lassie
he'll probably have some seats facing backwards.
I read recently (in the Times or Economist) that you can fit more seats and people in by having seats alternatly facing forwards and backwards - an extra aisle in a 777 apparently. Some company in HH I think it was did it. And it's legal.
NOFXmike
panzies.

Some airline in the US has seats that face back and front. I flew it once from PHoenix to Chicago-Midway. I sat backwards for fun, but I felt like I was in the circus-- it was odd. I'm not sure which crap airline it was, perhaps Southwest? I'm not sure. As a rule within the US i try to fly Midwest, if possible.

And more fun. If the put in small tables you could play cards or monopoly for hours. It would also allow parents more space to keep the kids occupied too. Didnt someone want to start a cut price to australia too?

my understanding was that it wouldn't be like on a train. you'd get a bit more leg room, but not enough for a table - you'd have to make do with the one that comes out of the arm rest.
gideon
Shame, still being face to face and having that bit more room for the kids to wiggle in would make the journey easier. I'll be the first to devolop a whole range of face to face aircraft games like battleship!

Many many many years ago I flew with BA (must have been from Hamburg to UK) and they
had part of the cabin backward seating. Think A/C was a trident.
I found it a most unpleasent experience - I dont like siting backwards in a train either.
Yes - I know its potentially safer...

Would hate to be stuck facing a family with kids though while they wiggled in my leg room.

Maybe they will buy a few A380s and put 3 decks in there smile.gif

I guess they could leave some "flying alone" seats somewhere.

Guess I can run onto a plan faster than a kid anyway tongue.gif

Here's the article about flying backwards

and some quotes from the article:

QUOTE
The space gained by making every other seat face the rear of the aircraft means that passengers will now be staring into the face of their neighbour, at extremely close proximity
Airline seating already places passengers within each other’s intimate personal space, but sitting side by side allows them to avoid eye contact and so control their environment. Placing them in a face-to-face situation for many hours removes that control and is bound to cause insecurity. They’ll feel like sardines packed in a box.
Airlines could certainly benefit: a Boeing 777-300 with 261 economy seats in 3-3-3 layout could be reconfigured to 3-4-3 and gain another 21 seats. An Airbus 380 would gain 50 seats, but passengers, insists Bettell, would gain “an additional two inches of pitch.

“It’s not us, says BA...Virgin and BMI said they were aware of the concept but weren’t interested. “Not us, either, said First Choice. “We’re more about comfort.
Neither Ryanair nor EasyJet was available for comment.

Don't worry, with Ryan Air the kids are put in the cargo hold.

Ive had the displeasure of being on SW flights with the 4 seater option. Frankly its not kids you have to worry about its full sized twats travelling in groups, usually hen or stag parties on their way to or from some party destination. Worse group I'd ever seen on a flight was a hen party on their way to Vegas, the memory of the bride to be's continuos cackling still gives me the shivers.

Not mine! You'll either lose or be Rugby tackled ;-)

Oh yeh , like you didn't cackle like crazy when u were on your hen night. All women cackle on their hen night. Some cluck too but generally cackling is where it's at.

hope this helps.

i think some flights in the not too distant future might offer standing room. you will have some cushiony thing to lean against and some type of safety harness, but not a seat. i think this is being discussed for some very busy inner asian flights that aren't very long like tokyo - osaka. potentialy you might be able to fit like 3000 people into an a380 that way. i guess the boarding and de boarding might take longer than the flight though.

as far as super cheap flights to north america from europe are concerned, i'm all for it. i wish some cheap airline like ryan air would offer roundtrip flights for under 100€ with all taxes included. i've seen some pretty good deals with air india from frankfurt to lax roundtrip for like 250€, but i think that was only in january and february. for travel between two obscure cities like hannover and portland oregon, so far the lowest fare i've been able to put together is about 500€ rt (with all taxes included). i think economy seats are uncomfortable on any airline for more than a few hours. the worst is being stuck in the middle of a middle section on a packed flight. but i want to fly to the u.s. a few times a year and don't have much money to spend. i'm always willing to spend the lowest i can get on a flight. overall even twelve hours on a packed plane isn't that much torture (it's very uncomfortable but ultimately it ends and all is well again). i don't need any seat back entertainment or food. i'll just meditate, read and bring my own sandwich. i guess all they need to do is offer water and the smallest, narrowest, least leg room economy seating conceivable for me at 1.80 m and 75kg, and if the price is right i'll take it.

i think the cheap flights might make for some long and interesting trips. for example i drive 4 hours from my home near braunschweig to frankfurt city, park in some neighborhood that feels safe to leave my car for a few weeks, or some suburb and take the s-bahn to the hauptbahnhof. from there i catch the bus to hahn airport. then take some ryanair flight say to hartford connecticut say via shannon or stansted. from there i get a bus or some combination of busses into manhattan. then i take the a train to some stop before howard beach, where i get off and transfer to a local brooklyn or queens bus to jfk (to avoid paying the extra sky train fare). then i catch a jet blue flight to portland, from where i take the max to my place there. all in all maybe a 48 hour trip vs. something like 16 hours door to door (drive to hannover langenhagen free parking, s-bahn to the airport, fly to frankfurt then a quick connection to the nonstop flight to portland and then get picked up or take the max).

According to the publicity blurb all the A380s are going to devote valuable space to inflight cocktail bars.

Yeah we believe you.

If Ryan and Sleazyjet pack em in like this, then they`ll make even more money...
