Advice on minimising malaria risks etc.

Hi Everyone,

does anyone have any experience here? I have spoken to my Gynie and she says that really unless it's a
low risk area she would not recommend it. Looking at the map though Kruger Park it medium to high risk.
I know a lot has to do with season, area etc. but I would really appreciate any advice on this.

Any recommendations for a place to stay south of Durban...where there is no malaria...
Somewhere quiet no mass tourist area. Also traveling with a 1.5 year old...

Cheers
Aine

Southern Kruger should be low risk at this time of year (if any risk at all). We have never bothered to take anything when visiting this part of Kruger. On the East Coast Malaria is not a risk south of St Lucia. There are a ton of places to stay - give me a few minutes and I'll see if I can find the number for a place that we stay at that is on the river and the sea coast +/- 1.5 hrs South of Durban.

Edit: you can contact michelaharris@webmail.co.za for details on:
  • Self catering apartment on the Wild coast - sleeps 6 - approx. 200€ per day depending on season
  • Small Self catering apartment in Camps Bay - approx. 200€ per day depending on season
  • Large Self catering apartment in Camps Bay (Cape Town) - 3 bedrooms + bathrooms - approx. 500€ per day depending on season

I just returned from Kruger last week and didn't see a single mosquito. I really wouldn't worry about maleria in SA. It's not a problem even in the Lowfeld (Kruger) area.

I also stayed at the Umgazi River Bungalows which are highly recommended. Situated on a lagoon, it's plesant and comfortable and not too expensive.
