Commuting between Erlangen and Nuremburg

Advice on choosing which town to live in

Hi,

I am probably moving to Erlangen next month along with my wife and 3 month old son. Going by the messages posted, can someone advise whether it would be wiser to live in Nuremberg and commute to my office in Erlangen or whether it is recommended to live in Erlangen itself.

Also if someone could give an idea of the rentals, both in Erlangen and Nuremberg. I am looking for a 2/3bedroom apartment/house.

Just for information, I am 31 years old and my wife is 28 and we are from India.

Thanks,

Biswajit

I would live in Erlangen unless you really need that absolute big town life that Nueremburg offers. Rental will be cheaper, plus the beer should be better. Put that on top of the bergkirchweih and you have yourself a seller. Plus it's closer to bamburg than nuernberg is. You can always make the short train ride down to nuernberg for the day. But thats just my thoughts. I have never ever heard anything negative about Erlangen. Nuernberg I cannot say the same.

These are some properties for rent in Erlangen.

You can do the same search for Nürnberg as well on meinestadt.de, in order to campare space and prices.

Unfortunately cannot comment on which town is better to live in.

Good luck

Hi Klein and Iain,

Thanks for your replies.

Klein - Those links are in german. Is it possible to get some links in English?

Iain - How big is Erlangen (population wise)? Is there are sizeable number of English speaking people there?

This is all you need to know "bergkirchweih". This word makes the conversation irrelevant, it has to be Erlangen

I thought I did mention that word earlier but we should say it again just to get that warm fuzzy feeling happening biggrin.gif

Hi there,

Well as an 'English' person for me, I think there are more ex-pats living in Nürnberg as there are also 2 major Sportswear companies (adidas and Puma) based in the small village of Herzogenaurach but most of us live in Nürnberg as Herzo. is too quiet. I have lived in Nürnberg for 4 years now and I really like it. I have heard from my work colleagues that parts of Erlangen for rental are quite expensive as it is predominantly a student town, however I don’t have that knowledge from personal experience!

Nürnberg is such a beautiful city with so much to see and do and it does have some great family properties situated on the outskirts of the city, if you don’t really want to live in the city centre. We also have great beer festivals and of course the infamous Christmas Market. Erlangen is only a 15-20min. train ride away from Nürnberg and it takes me 25mins (drive) from Nürnberg city centre to Herzogenaurach, which is only 10mins drive away from Erlangen.

There is also an 'English speaking' mother and toddler group in Nürnberg, check out this website for info.

I hope this info. Can help you with your relocation to Germany.

If you want a good opinion that might be valid regarding life as an Indian family in the area go talk to Mr. Singh. He own's a small restaurant on Schuh Strasse. It's called Pizza Punjabi. There are always lots of Indiana hanging out there and they speak English. The curry's pretty decent too!

Mr. Singh has been there for 20 some odd years and can tell you anything you want to know about the area.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I am more inclined towards Nuremberg.

Any idea what would be the rentals for a 2/3 bedroom apartment/house there.

I tried to get information on the net but there seems to be information only about Munich at mrlodge.

Thanks thompsa for the offer to help. Perhaps we could be in touch.

No problem, rolleyes.gif glad I can help out. Send me a PM with your rental requirements and I will have a look on our internal webpage to see if there is anything that may interest you, as people are always posting places to rent.

I have lived in Nuremberg for the last 2 1/2 years and commuted to Erlangen by Car. It is not a problem. I also have a colleague who uses public transport. Really depends if you are close to bus or train services. I live in an area of Nuremberg that is very ethnically diverse and have a two bedroom apartment with underground garage and a small garden overlooking a park. The rent is 750 per month cold.
Not sure of your circumstances but if you are getting relocation assistance make sure that they include apartment search and get a complete package so they will connect all the utilities etc. Especially if you have no or limited German. In Germany the tenant pays the real estate agency fees so if you do not have a relocation package i suggest not using an agent and try and find a private apartment. These usually are listed with the words "Provision Frei" or something similar.
We are moving out end of June and are looking to sell the kitchen so if you are interested send me a PM. Oh not sure if you are aware but most apartments do not have kitchens installed as this is also the responsibility of the tenant. As are light fixtures blink.gif

Another option is with a developer. The one that we have purchased our house through also rents apartments, either for owners or their own.

Also in Germany they talk in rooms not in bedrooms. So the living room, bedroom and say entry are all rooms so a three room might only have one bed room.
