I found this search tool quite useful as you can specify the specialty and any language requirements: Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Hamburg

Great website! Found a good HNO doctor near my place who treated my allergy which I mistook for cold smile.gif

Any idea how to find dentist? The website doesn't have "zahnarzt" option.

THANKS!

The Aertzekammer site is also searchable, and has dentists too. You can search by speciality or region, no mention of languages though.

Probably more so that with doctors, with dentists word-of-mouth reccommendation is desirable (even with the pun).

Wow, is this thread timely or what! I just injured my knee and may have to have surgery. Where can I find opinions/ratings of local hospitals?

Also, does anyone know if there is a COBRA-type holdover for when my insurance runs out and I am still in therapy for what will then be a "preexisting condition"?

Thanks.

@'graham_d': I went on the link you gave. Under which section did you find "zahnarzt"? I tried the drop down list but didn't find any.

@'HEM': Who'd you recommend as dentist? I went to one around the corner from where I live and I find him too old, dated and no English. I fell in love with those modern, English speaking dentists at Dr. Erik Winkelsberg's clinic in Munich. smile.gif

Sorry, it's in the list of links on the left side of the page, it actually takes you to http://www.zahnaerzte-hh.de where you can do another search!

I've just been to my first dentist in Hamburg, getting a crown done (so the root filling is done, the rest is to come - the tricky bit, the canal surgery itself, was already done by another dentist in Vienna) and the experience was good, his English is ok too. We got the guy's name by recommendation - totally agree with HEM.

I live outside Hamburg on the outskirts of a town on the A23 Autobahn. I used to live in Wedel and went to a dentist in Blankenese
since my wife had been there for years having had teeth ruined by a (female) dentist elsewhere. This guy was OK (supposed
to be good actually) but he wasnt good with children...

Since a couple years we all go to a dentist in out town & are happy - hes a bit elderly, quiet
and gives an air of confidence. Hes also helped me with a temperature-sensative tooth...

BUT - my German is good enough and I have never tried speaking English with any dentist here...

Othmarschen - are you at DESY per chance?

The first dentist I had to visit many years ago was in Othmarschen but no idea as to his name...

Nope, NXP (what used to be Philips Electronics, they sold us last year). Just across the river, and my girlfriend is at Airbus.

Anyway we live in the 'downmarket' end of Othmarschen, across the other side of the autobahn. It's really Ottensen, but the address isn't (and Ottensen is pretty lively, a nice place to live).

I used the search but it doesnt tell a whole lot, does anyone have a normal english speaking general practitioner they go to and is decent?
Hammonia
We are at Praxisgemeinschaft Oldesloer Straße in Schnelsen.
Schnelsen is not exactly central, so depends where you come from.
Anyway, the doctors speak English, at least I know that Dr. Fricke, Dr. Missal and Dr. Bittmann speak English - problem might be with the PA's, I don't know if they speak English, but there's quite a few of them, so there should be at least one or two with who you could make an appointment without speaking German.

I highly recommend this practice, especially Dr. Fricke.
They are not the type who just prescribe antibiotics for everything, they always try to use less invasive medication, generally not too much chemical stuff. They have 3-4 general practicioners and two specialists for inner medicin. 3 of them also offer psychotherapy, I know that two of them also offer acupuncture.
For the general practicioners you can just go during their consultation hours without making an appointment, for the inner medicin you have to make appointments.
Downside is that you have to be really patient, waiting time is generally very long - that's because they are really good, so they have a lot of patients.

There is also a link for English speaking docots on the website of the British Embassy and for thoses living in the east of Hamburg. To that account you'll also find English speaking tax advisors, lawyers and so on listed there.

We found that Dr. Hofmeister in Papenstrasse in Eilbek is a really good GP. He is an ex military doctor and got round quite a bit. Fluent in English and only does what is needed. A very straight forward man.

Dentist wise there is a nice lady in the Schanze: Dr. Margaret Breuell, in Schanzenstr. 115, 0 40 / 43 73 28. Dont know where she comes from, but also fluent in English, very patient and also very empathetic.

Can anyone recommend a good English-speaking podiatrist (foot doctor)?
Hammonia
You would probably go to an orthopaedic, don't think there's so many foot doctors...?!!
