Ideas for a winter holiday in the States

Suggested destinations after visiting New York

Hi TT-ers,

I'm looking for ideas for holiday destinations in the States. Plan so far is: NYC from 27th Dec to 1st Jan and then somewhere else til Jan 5th.

My boyfriend and I will be flying there from Munich to meet my family flying from Ireland. They (parents, 2 brothers 19 and 13) wanted to go skiing after to Hunter Mountain. We're looking for other alternatives - why fly all the way over there to ski when we can drive to Austria - plus we have all the gear here.

So, any suggestions? Florida? Somewhere else down south? Can either be for chilling or more active...we're easy smile.gif

Well, if you do decide you want to go skiing, don't waste your time at Hunter Mountain (please). Drive up to Vermont (Sugarbush, Killington, for example) and ski there. But, personally, when I go home to Vermont, I don't think about skiing at home because I can ski here in Germany (well, in Austria).

I'd head down to Washington, DC or fly to Florida.

Florida can be nice at that time of the year. Quick pop down to Marco Island perhaps?

or Boca Raton?

@kitkat64: Hunter Mountain was recommended by friends of my parents - I'm not sure whether they'd drive up to Vermont for the few days - TBH. I dont think its really worth skiing at all for the few days cos they've never done it before!

We were in DC for a couple of days a few years ago so I'd prefer to go somewhere I've never been before.

That said, was in Florida once in December as well - in Orlando and Clearwater. Wouldn't mind checking out somewhere else in the area though.

So, anyone else have any other suggestions?

hey,

if i were in your position, i'd take a train, or drive up to montreal and then maybe on to quebec city. not the u.s., but its a bit of variety and not too far from new york. and there's a lot of pretty countryside in between (i love the hudson river valley). otherwise i'd maybe head down to savannah georgia and maybe charleston s.c. where it might be a bit warmer and maybe some nice unique city sightseeing as well. i've never been to any of these places except new york, but thats why i'd go to them.

I agree. Hunter Mountain is close to NYC but it's not very good, even by eastern-US standards (which pale in comparison to western-US and Alps standards). As suggested Vermont is much better but it's at least 4.5 hours from NYC. Actually Hunter is at least 2.5 hours away so it's not a huge difference but probably enough to warrant an overnight in Vermont whereas Hunter can be a day trip.

Times Square for New Years is a must at least once in your life. Get there early (like 6pm) and be prepared to be unable to come and go from whatever block you're on. As such, bring your own alcohol!

You can spend a lifetime in NYC and not get it all in but if you're set on a change of scenery I'd suggest going south. Washington D.C. is great (but not warm) and Florida is usually just a cheap plane flight away.
