Visa info for non-EU citizens visiting Slovakia

...including for German residence permit holders

I hold a non EU passport but have a Deutsch residence permit for 2 years 2007-08. I would like to transit from Poland to hungary via Slovakia. My question is do I need a transit visa? Although no transit visas are required for Poland, hungary and Chz Republic if we have suitable residence permits of the Schengian Countries & entry and exit points are different and stay in less than 5 days. This has been clearly mentioned in the Hungarian and Polish counsulate website. Regarding the Chz I saw a number of postings hence it was explainatory. For Slovakia can anyone suggest or have expereince for the same.

Also do I need to carry a ticket for the forward journey in case of a transit visa.

E.g. If I go from Prague to Krankow at the Polish Border will I need to show them a ticket from Poland to example Slovakia or Hungary?

Please clarify if anybody has done this before
MonksTown
You really need to clairify this with the Slovak consular authorities.
Happy trails.

If you can transit Slovakia for 5 days without a visa, consider a stopover in this lovely but often overlooked country. cool.gif

I was planning to take a stop over at Liptovsky in Slovakia and visit Tatra Mountains.

Hello Darkknight,

So as per your above quote Chz and Slovenia should be no problem till 90 days. But Poland and Hungary will be limited to transit of 5 days. Is my understanding right?

P.S: My residence permit is Deutsch and not Netherlands. Also is this information from any specific website? Can you please share the website address if any

Anyway Thanks for the information
arshoo
yes you are right in that understanding, be sure to have confirmed tickets for onward journey and also reservation docs of the hotel you are staying in (helpful when entering Hungary/Poland)

Slovakia! smile.gif

I've never stopped in Liptovsky Mukulas but it is meant to be worth a visit.
The Tatras are brilliant, both the High Ones, the Low ones and the Slovensky Raj National Park for limestone trails.

based on experience, i can say that they can randomly turn you down in any eastern european border. i suggest to get a visa which is also a pain in the neck. i am really looking forward these guys to join Schengen

No. You said you wanted to transit thru those countries, so thats how the Visa program treated your stays in those countries. As a Transiter..
and as a transit person you are allowed 5 Days without a Visa. If you plan to stay longer than 5 days in those countries, then you require
a visa BEFORE you go there.

As for when the 10 new eastern states will join Schengen. They already have.

From the Schengan Agreement Wiki:

QUOTE
New members: 1 May 2004 - Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia

BUT, they have not implemented it yet. Implementation of the Schengen Agreement will be in 2 steps. (Dates Subject to change)

1. 31 December 2007 - For overland and sea borders
2. 29 March 2008 - For Airports
MonksTown
Oh! Thanks for that info Darknight. smile.gif

But be ready for more "random" ID checks on the roads and railways of Bavaria after then. ph34r.gif

I am purchasing a ticket from Deutsche bahn from Prague- krankow- Liptovsky(Slovenia)- Budapest-Vienna
This ticket is valid for 2 months and all I need to do is get a reservation before boarding the train. This was what the Deutsche Bahn informed me

Arshoo: Can you please tell me why I need a hotel reservation? I am transiting so why? I have a continental insurance with me for 2 years which will be valid. Please clarify

Sharpe: As per your email, based on experience they can turn me down in any border? But if i have a ticket for a forward jorney, continental insurance then it should not be a problem. Can you please clarify to me which specific cases are turned down. Getting the tourist visa is a pain!!! But I would like to make use of this transit visa to be best. Can you suggest suitable reasons or additional documents to carry?

Sorry to pick but it is SLOVAKIA !
New Delhi is the capital of the US State Indiana right? wink.gif

For these journeys, reservations are mostly optional, not compulsory.
BB If you travel by train bewteen Krakow and Liptovsky Mikolas, be prepared for a LONG journey compared to the distance as no rail lines cross the Tatry Mountains and you will be going way to the west of east via Cadca or Kosice.

Likewise from Liptovsky Mikulas to Budapest where you will be going via Bratislava or Kosice unless you want to go by "local" services.

Because the border police do not always follow the things written in the rule book and I was asked for that when I went that route. Luckily I had copies of where I had reserved and confirmation of onward travel. They are a moody lot and can give any excuse to stop you if they feel like it. You can argue with them but better to err on the safe side nah?

Unless you are transiting and not staying there for a day even?!

And no specific cases of who is rejected and who isnt, lets just say they would like a bit of fun when you carry a non EU/US passport wink.gif

PS - Tourist visa for Hungary is usually given at the spot, at the consulate.

I have an EU passport and I've been asked as an EU Citizen entering Germany why I didn't have an Aufenthaltsgenehmigung glued into my passport! laugh.gif

I thought it will start on 21 Dec 2007 ??
I'm planning to go to Prague on 22 Dec '07 and then on 25 Dec i will go to Vienna via Bratislava airport. Is it ok for me if i am a non EU citizen with Germany residents permit??
MonksTown
I hear the date for the land borders has been pulled into 21 Dec. But why go Prague to vienna via Bratlislava Airport?
Darkknight
21 December

I either fat fingered it, or the website I copied/pasted from was wrong.
miwild
Must be fun to fly 330 km from Prague to Bratislawa and the remaining 55 km from Bratislawa to Vienna ... instead of travelling 260 km from Prague to Vienna by train
apiapiaba
Bcoz at 25 Dec Skyeurope doesn't fly to Vienna. It fly only to Bratislava and using train is twice the price. From Bratislava I plan to take bus to vienna.
However it still a plan, i haven't buy the ticket so if it's not possible i will search other alternative.
MonksTown
I SINCERELY doubt that the plane from Prague to Bratislava and then bus to Vienna is half the price of the train direct or indeed quicker.
apiapiaba
well, for the 2 way skyeurope ticket cost 25 eu and for the bus using teravison 14 eu (2way) while using train is 82 eu.

However i've found other alternative, which s student agency bus direct from pragu to vienna (25 eu two way).
MonksTown
Did I understand that right?

Return (tax paid) flight Prague-Bratislava for EUR 25?
I DON'T BELIEVE IT !

"Student Agency" bus comapany offer some pretty cheap headline deals for sure.
But where did you get quoted EUR 82 for Prague-Vienna by train?
Return first class including writhing on a couch with Dolly Buster and a live concert by Karel Gott ?

For the train :
I sent them an email (info@cd.cz) asking about the price and where can i buy it online.
Here is their reply:

Good evening,

the price Prag-Wien-Prag in second classe per person is approx. 82 Euro including reservation. Ticket and reservation you can buy at any international cashdesk in Czech. It is impossible on-line via internet.
