So in the hopes of generating more interest in going cycling in the area I am starting a new thread. The purpose of this thread is to post a message whenever you want to go for a bikeride with someone. Just say when and where and go from there.
I've also given us tentative cycling club names: FAR: Fränkische Ausländiche Radfahreren and BAR: Bayerische Ausländiche Radfahreren.
Translation Franconian and Bavarian Foreign Cyclists. Hopefully we can get this going and maybe even plan some FAR/BAR meetups!
This thread is for Cycling meet-ups in the Franconian region (Nuremberg, Erlangen, Bamberg, Northern Bayern, etc.)
Now that the weather's nice let's start getting healthy together!

It's a way to exercise, enjoy nature and hang out with some other expats.
See ya on the trails

Does anyone want to go for a ride tomorrow morning?
I have to catch a train in the evening but am free in the morning and the weather is supposed to be great.

Balk, I'm on for Sunday. Have you ever done the ride along the canal toward the Fernseherturm?
Balk64

Hi Man
OK Sounds good. Meet at the usual place?
Which direction is Fernseherturm?

How about we start out of town somewhere?

Apr 24 2007, 10:01 pm
It's a 30 minute train ride to Brombachsee and it's surrounded by bike trails. A nice ride around the lake.

If there is just us two we can take the car.

Im in Amberg, but I am up for some riding this weekend. Thats assuming no one wants to go
the game on Saturday.

Dolfan, you're welcome to come. Can you meet us in Pleinfeld?
I bought a copy of the bike maps for the Area. It looks like it would be a great ride. There are trails all around each side of the Lake and bridge in the middle if we get tired and want to cut it short.
I also now have maps for all sorts of routes.
BTW Balk, the Funfe Flusse Radweg we were on last weekend goes over 350KM. Now that'd be a hell of a ride.

Its well out of the way. When you are going on this side of Nuremberg Ill join in.

I checked the train schedule and looks like a train leaves at 13:38. Next one is an hour later. So lets meet at 1:15 and take the earlier train. Otherwise we will be late getting back!.

OK for those of you who have been thinking "Hey this sounds like a great idea" well it is and yesterday you missed the second FARC ride. (Lex I added the "C" for club

)
Here is a shot of the the scenery:

That was a great ride. And surprisingly I'm not SOOO soar today. Although, I did whimp out and take the train home from Erlangen today.
BTW Balk, I recruited another woman who hasn't been riding in a while, so maybe we can get Helen to come back!
What do you guys think of touring a few Franconian wineries by bike?
dolfan
Apr 30 2007, 7:13 pm
Having just moved from Wurzburg, I can HIGHLY recommend the trails and wineries on Franconia. But you may ned to have a plan and schedule a tour or 2 as some of the better wineries only do tours by reservation. For example,
Arthur Steinman in Sommerhausen has very tasty stuff, but the tour is only by reservation and I think he wants a weeks notice and like 8 people.
Lexicon
Apr 30 2007, 7:17 pm
So we need 8 people?
volunteers?
By the way Balk, that extra "c" is kinda farc'd up man. Although it does open the door to all kinds of punny mottos:
Ride a bike, get FARC'd
Go FARC yourself.
FARC on Sunday, rest on Monday.
(insert more bad rhymes here)
Balk64
Apr 30 2007, 7:33 pm
See I was thinking Franconian Area Riding Club and for FARC sake the intention was to generate more puns!
As for the winery ride. Besides the fact that a bicycle is a very poor transportation device for cases of wine and that you can still loose your license if caught riding under the influence

have you seen the general areas where wineries tend to be in Franconia! There is a heck of a lot of up! (insert appropriate FARC pun here)
Balk
PS. just did a spell check and the suggested spelling for Franconian is Draconian
Lexicon
Apr 30 2007, 7:35 pm
Draconian...isn't that what they think of the Bavarians?
hmmm...well you certainly have a few good points:
1. Hills suck!
2. DWI on a bike would just give too many people way too much to laugh about.
3. I have never left a winery empty handed.
So maybe we should stick to flat bikerides and organize a winery tour.
Balk64
Apr 30 2007, 7:37 pm
With a designated driver!!!
Will convince Helen to join next ride.
So next Sunday weather permitting?
Lexicon
May 4 2007, 8:17 am
OK Guys...this week's plan:
We'll have two groups of three this week -- a fast group and a not so fast group, so if you've been chickening out, this is your chance to ease into it. This week we'll start in Erlangen to give everyone north of Nuremberg a chance to ride.
Meet: 1300 Sunday in front of Erlangen Hbf.
Ride: Mostly flat route surrounding Erlangen, probably 2-2.5 hours ending back in Erlangen.
Maybe we can hit one of the beer gardens when we finish.
As of now we should have 6 people, hopefully more.
Who's in?
Balk64
May 4 2007, 7:01 pm
Should be there. Will confirm Sunday. Weather might be a bit iffy

Man, it's raining again, so I guess we made it between the clouds. It was a nice ride.
Next weeks plan:
Fünfe Flusse Radweg
12 km each way, Nuremberg to Wendelstein.
Meet Hbf 14:00
Probably 2-2.5 hours
Flat and Shaded.
We'll have two groups again for different speeds.
If anyone's been waiting, here's your chance
