I need some help translating some legal and law terms and wondered if anyone could recommend a good legal dictionary -- German <-> English.

I tend to use Dietl/Lorenz and Romain. I think they're quite expensive, but maybe the library will have copies. I can't give you any web links, unfortunately, as I prefer not to use online dictionaries for legal translations - I'm never sure how reliable they are. Hope this helps.

Try:
www.translegal.comAnother good source for "beginners" who need to learn/understand Legal English is: "International Legal English" ILEC prep book pub'd by Cambridge U. and distrib'd by Klett.

I have an older Dietl at home - I won't touch legal translations if I can help it, even though I did pre-law in the states. Won't be back until thursday evening though if it can wait that long. I may have another one too, come to think of it... (I should really go through my old books..)
Thanks all, those are great tips! And no, it wasn't for me, I wouldn't touch legal translations with a ten-foot pole, but "a friend" has lots more time than I do... come to think of it he did pre-law too, but it was 40 years ago. Wonder if it helped.

Couldn't have hurt!

I remember things from School and Uni sometimes faster than spent more time learning a few years ago. May bring a list of unused dictionaries to the next meetup though, spring cleaning and all that.

I can highly recommend this one: "Dictionary of Legal and Commercial Terms" by Alfred Romain, published by C.H. Beck'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung, Munich.
