Full Version: Translators' meetup, monthly networking event

Can't believe a whole month has gone by - wheredigo? The second Wednesday of the month is coming up soon so if any translators feel like casting off the fetters binding them to their desks and emerging blinking into the real world, let's meet up. DDBug is not around on Wednesday so I'm posting the meet-up this time. Open to suggestions about where to meet - last time a suggestion of Tacos y Tequila got left on the shelf so we could go there this time. Come one, come all. Roll up, roll up.

This is also open to translators who don't have fetters, agoraphobia or workaholism, by the way.

Right then! Pursuing the idea of planning instead of last-minute frazzles, what are people's preferences as a date for the next time? Wed 9th or Thur 10th July? To include presentation of Omega-T translation software by hughk, location probably Lebenslust in Schwabing.
Either evening is OK by me.
Gen
I can't make either, leaving July 9 for a trip. Take notes!
DDBug
Either *should* work for me, though Wednesdays are generally preferable.

Will all the football stuff be over with by then?
rappy
Thursday for me, but I have class until 7:00 (in Schwabing, right at the Siegestor) so if it starts a little later that's my preference.
Gen
German to English translation wanted -- someone asking for a price quote on a contract for buying a house. Anyone interested?
Kay
What does everyone think of the two "quotes" given for that job so far? I had to put the word in inverted commas because I just can't take those offers seriously (and I certainly hope the OP will think long and hard before accepting either of them).
Gen
I think they're ridiculous and wanted someone who charges by the word to go over there and give a real quote. wink.gif moran gave me a mathematical formula to convert lines to words and I have it written down somewhere but I'm actually working on some PHP at the moment...
Small Town Boy
Depends what the OP wants. I assume they only want to vaguely understand what they're signing, in which case a cheap, sub-par translation will do for them – basically just a step up from Babelfish. If it has to have any form of legal basing, then obviously they need to call in the professionals.

I missed all the stuff about the quote back there. Formula for converting lines into words? Er, somewhere between 7 and 8 words per line - does that make me a mathematician?

So, hughk is in the starting-blocks for a demo/presentation of open-source CAT tools, concentrating on Omega-T, for next Thursday 10th. I will chat up the guys at Lebenslust tonight and convince them that a posse of heavy-duty cocktail drinkers will arrive, drink, vanish downstairs, and magically return to drink some more (DDBug, I will be dropping your name and hope that wins them over...).
I'm assuming and hoping we can get the usual 8ish people together including non-TTers, so please sign up below:

Ok, but if he acts concerned, just tell him he won't have to throw the party out at 4 am ph34r.gif (But could you ask if the young Swedish guy - Erik - will be working upstairs ???)

You've never seen my handwriting, Tigs. Specially not after a cocktail.

I should stress that there will of course be ample opportunity for the usual necking of cocktails and moaning about clients, despite the brief foray into seriousness.

I'm afraid I'm out this time - it's the boy's birthday. Someone who isn't a lush, please take notes for me smile.gif.
Gen
I want it on videotape. More incriminating, really.
crusoe
So reservation has been made under Toytown for Thursday from 7 pm.
