Hiya
some of those at the Friday night pizza doubted the existance of Baltistan.
Yum, yum don't those words taste good! wink.gif
Yes where K2 is and where Baltis come from.
How the Balti got from Baltistan to Birmingham.
Although the basic idea came from the area as did the first restaurant owners, the area is mainly vegetarian so the meat dishes are a Brum thing.
Balti also means "bucket" in Hindi and refers to the shape of the cooking pot.
This is probably the best book on the topic and includes lots of recipes and a Balti history.

Those words might taste better with some curry sauce on, love.

Lost for words.
Thanks for the research Katrina, spoilt my day it has wink.gif

We Brummies will just have to invent something else worthwhile to give to the world.
Katrina
Lots of things are great about Brum it is not shit (and yes I do want the calendar).
And this is just plain bostin'.
And what about James Watts' steam engines? Or disc brakes, invented by Frederick Lancaster from Birmingham in 1902 and the jet engine, invented by Frank Whittle from Birmingham in 1930? And Duran Duran? And The Streets?
Katrina
PS I have, however, no comment on Ethiopian food. No comment, whatsoever.

I was thinking more of my generation rolleyes.gif

However I can't talk having deserted the place a.s.a.p.
Kza
Black Sabbath?
Jeeves
@Kza Thanks for thinking that they are my generation wink.gif

There's plenty to have come out of Brum in the past, but I'm racking my brains to find something (a) current and (cool.gif worthwhile.

.. quite right: it's given the world Cadbury's Dairy Milk; only marginally less important than the steam engine.

and this to boot wacko.gif

Are The Streets not current or worthwhile?
And that Whiskas milk for cats was invented at Aston Uni. Top stuff that.
Dairy Milk as with all Cadbury's does of course take preference though.
Ooooh I could murder/death/kill for a bar of whole nut right now.

I went to the Cadburys place. Bourneville isn't it? Or Curly Wurly. It was superb eating loads of sweets, but the entire area reeks of cocoa, so when you come out full of choc and wanting to puke a bit, a solid wall of burnt cocoa aroma whacks you in the guts. Well rank.
Katrina
Bourneville. The village itself exists only because of the chocolate factory as it was founded by the Cadbury family so that their workers had a social enviroment (schools, community), early "happy worker = more productive worker" ethic.
At my degree ceremony, Adrian Cadbury gave me my bit of paper. Rather surreal getting your degree off Willy Wonka (at the time I could have preferred some chocolate instead but what the heck).

@ Katrina If I remember I'll bring back some whole nut.
But higher priority has to go to my first Birmingham Balti and using that opportunity to find out The Truth about its origins.
Jeeves
I have to confess that I was slightly skeptical about the results of Katrina's internet research at first. Didn't want to believe it and all that.
However I have now consumed my first Balti, whether by coincidence or not in Birmingham, and it tasted, well, OK. I asked the waiter where the dish comes from. His answer: Northern Pakistan.
So there you go. My illusions shattered.

@ Katrina Btw I didn't forget that choccy...
Katrina
HURRAH! I shall look forward to that choccy - thanks tons!

Whatever the research, there are some things that remain true.

One of them is that Balti was invented in Birmingham, just accept it and get on with your lives... tongue.gif

Other legends from Birmingham include...

1/ Crossroads, the motel that "acorn antiques" was modelled on
2/ Ozzy Osbourne (always hated the music, but what a great character...never lost his accent)
3/ The accent that fools most RADA trained actors (they always speak Black Country)
4/ Tiswas

I can't think why I'm leaving (wel yes I can actually)
