I just opened my hotmail and found one of those spam emails promoting 'organ enlargement'
Usually such messages I delete without even opening.
Now the strange thing is, hotmail flags this message as been read. But I never even opened it.
This is the 1st time for me to experience such a thing.
Is this a new spammers trick or has my account been compromised ?

AFAIK emails cannot be marked as read unless you read them or mark them as read using some option.
Change your password. Someone else is reading your mails.
Make sure your PC does not have one of those key loggers installed.

I am using a MAC with one of those bluetooth keyboards.
Is it possible that someone is reading my bloothtooth keyboard keystrokes.

Yes, but not very likely unless you're suspecting someone you share a flat with or maybe one of your next-door neighbors. Macs arent Virus/Trojan/Wormsafe either, so i'd still rather suspect a keylogger then bluetooth spoofing / sniffing.

There are no Mac OS X viruses in the wild and I've not heard of any Macs being infected by keyloggers either. The chances of anyone having installed anything on your machine are practically nil. It's much more likely that your Hotmail account has been compromised, although it's still rather unlikely IMO. I'd blame a glitch at Microsoft if you don't have any other symptoms.
If you want to check your machine for viruses anyway use
this. Not sure if it will check for keyloggers.

I second Wheels notion that the most probable explanation is indeed that someone just bruteforced/hacked hotmail (or rather your hotmail account)

How many unread emails did you have. Seems kind strange that a hacker would just read one spam mail then politely go away?

it was just one email, but it enough to start the emergency bells
