Hi guys. Im a newbie in ingolstadt and finding it very hard to meet ppl as im here as an au pair comp alone! Any tips on how to get chatting to people or places safe to enter alone? Any help would b much appreciated!
Welcome to Toytown. There are a few other TTers in or near Ingolstadt, as you can see from an earlier thread,
Friends sought in Ingolstadt, and if you type "Ingolstadt" in the search box you'll find a few other relevant threads. Also, it will be easier to find contacts and events to join if you look at the topics in the regional, Munich forum. Hope this helps.

These are the
search results for "Ingolstadt". If you can get to Munich on your days off, look at the Events and meetups section to see what's on and where you can meet new people. Good luck!

Just in case you become a regular poster on Toytown, let me take this opportunity to make you aware that
SMS speak is discouraged on the forum. This is because it is bloody irritating to read and makes you sound like a 12-year-old. Other than that, good luck finding someone to hang out with!

In that case be prepared for not getting any worthwhile replies to your questions, if you can't be arsed to write using real words, many people will not bother trying to help you. It's your choice, but really how hard is it to write using real words?

"This is how all my friends write". But from what you've posted, you don't have any friends in Ingolstadt yet. And you're not encouraging many people to want to be your friend

If somebody gives you polite advice about what is the "culture" on this forum, think bout what you want from the people on this forum.
Maybe you should look for your friends here:

Can't see anything not friendly or polite there. Your immediate reply was that you were going to continue to do it anyway, whether it pissed people off or not. That's when people started gtting less polite with you.
You are welcome to your attitude of "this is how I am, take me or leave me", but then do be prepared for many people to "leave you".

@hols
the others do have a point it is irritating sometimes to us "oldies" as you put it to try and read in this fashion, and it is unfortunate that you ve been jumped on, this is also normal on this board but no need to run off anywhere just maybe take a little bit of advice and you will get a different response from some of the hardliners as well as others also willing to help.
mr k
Hols, please dont take this as additional bullying but hopefully I can explain whats going on here to you. Sms speak here is like walking into a traditional church wearing a dirty baseball cap. It might be acceptable form by all your friends in 99 other places, its just not here. Its considered to be VERY bad manners. Not much different than if you USED ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME.
Given the cell phone fees, its understandable in text message form between you and your friends but all letters here are free, including XYZs and even the bastard letter Q. Editor Bob who runs the joint is quite generous that way. So while you think people are bullying you, yes the might be hassling you a bit, but only because you're "reading" very rude to your audience. Particularly those that have to, by necessity, deal with butchered English via standard text messaging, non native English speakers, and baby talk even.
Also, I wouldn't be so quick to flounce off over your missing letters. Theres quite a lovely lot of aupairs and 18-24 year olds around here. They've probably had very similiar experiences and may be helpful to you should you stay a while in Germany. I'm sure you'd enjoy their company online or in person. They're far less wrinkled and crotchety than the rest of us, allegedly.
Goodluck to you.
@Don B4Wrs indeed.

Mar 25 2007, 3:55 pm
Hols, as far as I can see, the only reason to write as you do is to get as much information in one text message as possible. You're not charged by the letter here, feel free to write as much as you like. It quite simply makes your posts easier to read if they are written in normal english. And calling it the habit of a lifetime is a bit of a joke, don't you think? As far as I am aware, they still teach normal writing at school...
Good luck with finding people in Ingolstadt!

ok thank you. I am just having a very tough time here and have never felt so lonely in all my life and is not going particularly well here so far. So to have a load of people going on just about how I write on a keyboard just kind of takes the piss! I dint realise just how picky it all is here specifically as im used to msn but as im not looking for a figh i will try my best to write in complete words! I am doing quite well so far look! I cant promise i wont slip into my old ways from time to tim but on here ifit makes all that much difference I ill use complete words! Hopefully everyone is happy now!

I'm pretty sure we've all felt homesick at times, but believe me, it does get better. As jml said, there are a number of au pairs on here, and even more people who used to be au pairs and then came back/stayed because all in all, we loved it here. Feel free to drop me a PM if you need to talk...

So in the spirit of co-operation and unity that has descended upon Toytown on this sunny Sunday afternoon, allow me to direct your attention to the
18-24-year-old meetups that take place from time to time in Munich. Not that they can actually organise a pissup in a brewery that lot, bloody kids these days are incapable of commitment, etc etc.
yes, it gets easier and heres a link that might be useful for you when you do get to town:

Discounts for Au Pairs. Looks like you'd need a German speaker to help you navigate it though. Mine isnt up to par but others could probably help you easily enough.

And if you can't afford the train ticket, you could try using this service.
Mitfahrzentrale I know it's in German, but you could ask someone who you work/study with to help you with it.
It's basically a method of getting a lift in someones car, like hitchhiking but without the risks.

And as far as getting around on foot, I found the bit about Crossing Against the Light bizarre and confusing until I stumbled onto the links below. Useful, entertaining and free reading when you cant sleep at night.
QUOTE (jml @ Aug 11 2005, 1:04 pm)

Right, so there seems to be a lot of new faces in the house. I think it might be useful and/or amusing for some of you vets to post your own favourite topics to help them get to know the darker side of TT.
Below are some of my favourite topic on the many quirks of getting in/around and along in Munich. Most of em originated from Keydeck I think so most props to him. In any case, newbies, you can't buy this kind of insider info so get your read on:
Crossing Against the Light for peeps who trod on foot.
Train Travel for peeps who ride the train.
Plane Travel for peeps who fly the planes.
65 bits of Munich info and more. Of those I have to add: If you get caught by the Polizei, you can get fined for jaywalking, flashing your middle finger, waving your hand in front of your face aka the you're crazy symbol, and using obscenities. Probably many, many more.

Now that you found this place, you won't be lonely.
As for the sms speak, it gives me a headache reading it so I bypass all posts that have it unless they are very very short.
There are also standard forum abbreviations lik LOL, BTW, IIRC, IMHO and so on and they annoy me too. We had that shit in the restaurant biz too and after a while, car license plates were giving me orders.
