but i would really appreciate if you can provide with the name of that cafe too!!!
but anyway, so is this the final decision to meet tomorrow???
stubbs
well guessing from venus saying that shes going to look when she goes out, i imagine that she'll stick her head out the door later today and then post back.
jtw
So, 16:00 tomorrow at the place ViF described above.
VenusInFurs
Haha I HAVE left the house, but I forgot to post the name...it's Herr something or other...eek I'm so awful with remembering names these days!
Anyway on the corner of Metzer strasse and Prenzlauer Allee you ONLY have 2 choices...it's a 't' intersection, and one is a cafe and the other is a massage place.
phoenix-rose
You know... if it were me, I'd choose to have coffee and a massage?

Have fun you guys!

jtw
For those (like me) who have trouble figuring out how to get somewhere by BVG without a street address, note that there is an M2 tram stop called Prenzlauer Allee/Metzer Str.
VenusInFurs
Yep, and it's RIGHT outside the tram...I swear you can't miss it. If I can find it, anyone can, for real, haha!
stubbs
Hi, so i just got off the phone with venus in furs and apparently the cafe that she picked is closed so it will be moved somewhere else, right now shes waiting outside the cafe and will relocate once some people get there.
stubbs
just got another call from Veunus, looks like they have moved to a place called Arte, its number 9 metzer strasse on the corner of strassburger or strassman something like that.
phoenix-rose
Hi ALL!

Looks like this is my week. The meetup will be a little closer to me, though I'm sad to report a bit "touristy".

Starbucks Potsdamer Platz

Alte Potsdamer Straße 7
Berlin-Mitte

If you can't get here, you can't get anywhere:

Potsdamer Platz S 1, 2, 25, 26
Potsdamer Platz U 2

BUS: 129, 148, 200, 248, 348

See Ya 4 PM ish on Saturday, March 10.

Yes, if we decide when it's over, some folks may wanna go see what's at the Cinema!

~Rose
The Wanderer
you do know their are 2 Starbucks in that area as i made that mistacked once and waited in the one on the main road going up to the tor
so make sure you chouse the right one now
jtw
The current movie propsal is The Good German (in English, no subtitles) at 19:45. But we can discuss options over coffee.
phoenix-rose
Yes, there are two starbucks in this area. One looks out at the Tor - this is NOT where we will meet.

The other is near the Potsdamer Platz Arkaden - between there and the Cinema. If you're not sure, double check the address I posted before.

Hello, would a unknown German girl be allowed to join in? I am pretty new here and have read through some of the posting and like the spirit. I would love to meet some nice people and use my English in a non-working environment.
have a good evening...
belle
Sure...join the party...! We are all really nice people! (If I do say so myself!) Anyway, as for the specific Starbucks...isn't the one close to the movie theatre two doors down from a Hagen Dass? And I think it has an upstairs too? Maybe? Because...if so...and we got the upstairs...that would ROCK! Moviewise...I made it to ZERO movies while I was home...so The Good German sounds good to me!

xoxo
Belle
Nera
I'll be there, and I'd love to see The Good German.
Nera
Oh yes, and I vote for Haagen Dasz!
phoenix-rose
Yes, it's close to the haagen daas ice cream shop. I'm not sure if it has an upstairs or downstairs, but if it does, we can certainly meet upstairs.

Yeah, good luck, but i doubt you'll find him with a bunch of foreigners in a starbucks at potsdamer platz. Right, thats a combination of three highly unlikely chances. rolleyes.gif
phoenix-rose
tongue.gif Aww hell - at this point, if they were cute, I might settle for a "naughty" German hitting on me. biggrin.gif
Majisa
The German girl is going to join you. I will watch out for a group of English speaking folks and assume that this is you. Meet you tomorrow. Have a great Friday night.
Majisa
Andeee
Hi all. Well I´ve been reading about the meetings for a while, and looking after my daughter has stopped me coming to most of them, but today I have some free time! So if it´s all right with everyone I´m going to come along. Plus I figure it´s a nicer way to get to know the people on the forum.

Perhaps a small introduction. My name´s Andy and come from the Wirral (near Liverpool, UK). I´ve been in Berlin for about 3 years now and I have a 1 year old daughter (tomorrow!).

So, see you all later.
2elles2
...so can we bring back the tt- hat? i went to starbucks yesterday (admittedly kinda late) but found no tt-ers. i had a good book with me so it wasn't a big deal, but would be nice to meet some of y'all...maybe next week?

ll
jtw
Sorry we missed you. Actually, we got confused about which Starbuck's was which, so we might have been at different places. We were at the one on Eberstrasse, not Alte Potsdamer Strasse, as it turned out. It was indeed next to a Haagen-Dasz, though.

I'd PM you my Handy number, but I'll be out of town the next two weekends.
phoenix-rose
Since JTW is out for the next two weekends anyone want to pick up the baton for the weekend coffee meet up?

If not, I can organize again in the Potsdamer Platz area...

~Rose
phoenix-rose
Hi all,

Since it's St Patrick's Day weekend, I think that we should give up on this weekend for the coffee.

However, coffee will resume next weekend 4 pm, Saturday March 24, 2007 at the Starbucks near Potsdamer Platz SONY CENTER. Just to clarify, this is the one in Eberstrasse and NOT the one at alt potsdamer Strassee.

It is next to a Haggen Daas and around the corner from the Sony Center. The easiest directions are going to be to go up the stairs to the Potsdamer Platz S Banhof - the sony center will be on your right, the Arkaden across the street. Turn Left on to Elberstrasse (you'll walk past a bunch of pieces of the berlin wall and tourists taking photos.) You'll walk across a smaller street. There's an Italian restaurant (starts with a V but for the life of me I can't remember the name), then a Haagen Daas and finally, the Starbucks. Across the street is a building that's been "wrapped" with an ad - The last time I was there, it was for a car - and the Cancoon Mexican restaurant.

Anyone have any suggestions for movies (if you're interested that night?)

Am I missing something here, or is part of the point of these meet-ups to find and share interesting new places? If so, I can't quite find the logic in choosing to have coffee at a global chain in the middle of a tourist trap. Never mind having it there two times in a row.

I've got nothing against Starbucks; in fact I'm profoundly in love with tall double-shot no-whip white mochas. But given the choice I think we'd all rather explore and support local businesses, and find something that we can't all experience anywhere else in the world.

I know it can take some legwork to find good places for these events -- regardless of whether it's Thursday drinks or Saturday coffee -- but again, I've always seen that as part of the point. And I enjoyed spending an evening last month walking around my neighborhood, popping into new bars so I could pick one for Thursday drinks.

I'm not trying to have a go at anyone. Obviously our schedules vary, and we can't always spare the time to do this. That's fair. But if you've got the baton for drinks or coffee and you're tempted to choose a chain, or for that matter anywhere we've already been recently -- or if you suddenly find yourself too busy to post the name and address of your selected location -- then perhaps it's time to pass the baton until next week.

This may mean that sometimes the baton gets dropped for a week. I'm sure we'd all rather that didn't happen -- but if it does, then perhaps that'll provide the motivation for others to get more involved.

Rose, if you're okay with it, I'd like to take the baton for the March 24 coffee meet-up. Just give me the say-so, and I'll post a location on Monday. But if I'm simply interfering and everyone else is content, then forgive me -- and enjoy your frappucinos.
phoenix-rose
Nate, please go ahead and figure someplace else - no problem with that. I had offered up the coffee baton for this week but no one seemed to want it. And, this week was crazy busy for me (keep in mind that I live out about as far as you can go from Berlin on the sbahns so the coffee shop I know is at minimum 1 hour from potsdamer platz), I haven't had a chance to go to berlin and try to find anything/anywhere else. Add to it that I know most people will not want to travel 1 or 2 hours out to the boonies with no bus transport on the weekend and well, you get the idea.

Personally, I hate starbucks, but since we missed several from the group last week (but had a nice time being close to the movie theater so it kind of fulfilled a secondary request of someplace close to a theater and wound up with dinner at a mexican restaurant around there) I just grabbed the most convienient place that was centrally convienient to get to hoping that someone would suggest something else. tongue.gif

The location for this week's coffee meet-up is Schwarze Pumpe. I've been in there a couple of times before, and it's a cool little place. It's got lots of atmosphere, and it's in a very hip little part of town that no one ever seems to get to, halfway between Mitte and P'berg. (It turns into a good, low-key kneipe in the evenings as well -- I almost picked it for Thursday drinks a few weeks back.)

Schwarze Pumpe is located at Choriner Str. 76, right on the corner of Fehrbelliner Str. It's an easy walk from either Rosenthaler Platz (U8) or Senefelder Platz (U2), as you can see on the map.

Hope to see you all there at 16:00 this Saturday, March 24.
VenusInFurs
I'm going to try to make it, but I have a meeting and then I want to make it to the gym (seeing as I pay through the nose for it), so I'm not sure if I'll make it!
espresso

travelnate
Sounds good -- if you have an exact street name and number, please post it so people can be sure to find it.

I can't make it this week as my family is in town, but I trust you guys'll have fun.
phoenix-rose
Hi Espresso,

I've got to work (again) so I can't make it. However, the number of people seems to vary from week to week. The largest I've seen was about 15 of us, and the smallest was 3-4.

Have fun and drink an extra one for me.

~Rose
jtw
I'm back in town, so I should be able to make it. And it's even starting to be funny hat weather...
phoenix-rose
If you wear your funny hat, I want Pictures!

Btw, How was N.O.?

~Rose
espresso
OK givin a week to organise this leave it to the last minute
the Phrase couldn´t organise an orgy in a brothel comes to mind but any how

OK the pace so the place is on Brunnenstraße Number 44 at the corner of Rehinsbergerstraße
as I said before next to a bar called double in right beside the UBahn Bernauerstraße (U8) has cafe writtin over in big brown writing
so we say 16.00

as I said before it is small but there are other cafes and bars around if there are too many people
jtw
I should have mentioned this at coffee, but is anyone up for visiting Knut at the zoo next weekend? BerlinOnline claims he's out to be seen from 14:00 to 15:00, so it could be a pre-coffee activity (and we could do coffee somewhere in Tiergarten or Charlottenburg).
phoenix-rose
YES! I WANT TO SEE KNUT. wub.gif

Yeah, I know, I'm a NUT.

And, I've got a 4 day weekend over Easter so... GO ME!!

~Rose
phoenix-rose
JTW,

Did you find a place in Tiergarten/Charlottenburg yet?

Did we still want to go see Knut the Cute before coffee?

~Rose

P.S. If no one volunteers, we can always look at:

http://www.berlinfo.com/Freetime/Food-Drin...nburg/index.htm

for hints.
jtw
How about http://www.cafeeinstein.com/ ? It's about 500m from the zoo.
phoenix-rose
Sounds great John (that's the one I was looking at too actually).

Do we wanna meet there before or out in front of the zoo on Saturday?

Edit to add Address for Cafe Einstein:
Kurfursten Strasse 58
10785 Berlin

tel. 49 30 261 50 96

Open from 9am - 1 am

Re How to get here - Zoologisher Garten stop

Sbahn: S75, S9, S5
Ubahn: U2, U9

You can get here by bus as well, but I don't know what numbers... I'm pretty sure the 100 or 200 bus (tourist ones) will get you here.

~Rose

hi.. do i have to register if i want to come along? i would like to see knut as well. is the zoo really busy at the moment?
Deccie
the Zoo is going to be hopping full. Long queues and then so many poeple arout Knuttie that you will probably not get to see him.
eleventy one
thats what i was worried about... do you think it's better on a weekday?, early?
phoenix-rose
Nope, don't have to register - just show up at the appropriate meeting point (when that's decided) or at the coffee house at 4pm.

Re going early in the morning - Um.. maybe, but Knut is only on display for a certain time period each day. (about an hour or two) Remember, he's a baby, so he's gotta have some time to NOT be seeing the adoring crowds.
Deccie
any week day outside of the school holidays is probably the baest. However the schools are organising trips to see him too.

I think he (Knuttie the Cuttie) only ventures out from 14:00 - 15:00 so probably best to show up in morning do the zoo, get someting to eat and camp up for a place.
eleventy one
aw, baby bear. good point about the fixed times, thanks. do you know how long he'll be at the zoo for? for ever?
jtw

Well, he won't be a baby forever, which is why I want to see him in the flesh sooner rather than later. smile.gif

The thing I read said he was now on display for two one-hour periods a day, and 14:00-15:00 was the later of the two.

Yeah, it's 11:00-12:00 and 14:00-15:00:

http://www.zoo-berlin.de/erleben/aktuelles...Hash=03ea75b8d8

So I was thinking if we hit the zoo around noon we'd come in after the first set of bear-peepers.

Of course, complicating matters is the fact that Saturday is the one day to gather provisions during the Easter Siege.

... if you havent already gone, save yourself the trip. I had to go because of work and the chaos there is unbelieveable. I went to film the chaos, so for me it was perfect, but never again!! I'd hate to see what its like on the weekend. You have to line up out the zoo then to get a front row seat you have to stand at the fence hours before he comes out.. "let the water cool down before attempting to enter..."... but of course there are the other animals in the zoo smile.gif
