Dang it! I have to work next weekend, otherwise I would love to do the barbeque thing.

I'm on call Sat/Sun between 9 am and 6pm - but I'm not anticipating anything major - it's pretty calm right now.

JTW, sunday would be fine for me - either way.

~Rose
jtw
How about the Rangers-Sabres game Sunday night at 8pm?
phoenix-rose
ok this will sound so bad JTW, but what sport is that? where would I need to go? How much for tix?

~Rose
jtw
Heh. (Ice) Hockey. Stanley Cup Playoffs. I think the idea is to watch the game at Belushi's Bar near Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz.
phoenix-rose
Humm... uh... I'm not really into hockey, but I'll think about it. Someone would have to explain the game more than the puck goes into the net to score. (Seriously, thats the ONLY thing I know)

I have to work in the morning, so if I do come, then it'd be out of there before too late.

~Rose
belle
Oooooh...thats all I kow too...but I went to a Hockey Game once...and frankly...it goes SOOO fast that you don't really notice much else...! (Except the fights and maybe a bloody nose or two!)

xoxo
Belle (who can't make it because she is in Texas...where the only Rangers palying are the Texas Rangers...buthey...the beat the Blue Jays...so why complain!
kateTV
The b-b-q idea will have to be put on hold for awhile mad.gif . The ground is quite damp and I dont want to freeze... has anyone else a suggestion for brunch in the weekend?
jtw
There's a place on Rosenthaler Strasse near Hackescher Markt called Bagels and Bialys, but it's pretty small and most if not all of the tables are on the outside. So not good for a group outing on what might be a rainy day.
jtw
Okay, so the brunch tip I got was to go to someplace on Kollwitzplatz in P'Berg. My friend mentioned some Italian place whose name he didn't remember (Belluno seems like a possibility) but apparently there are lots of places to have brunch there.

Another Sunday morning meal possibility would be a Bavarian breakfast of Weisswurst, Brezen and Weissbier, which I know you can get at Brauhaus Mitte, and also at some cafe near S Charlottenburg. But that's sort of specialized and I'd only want to propose it if others were enthusiastic about Weisswurst.
jtw
So is anybody up for brunch around noon Sunday on Kollwitzplatz?
phoenix-rose
I have to work this weekend - but next weekend for sure...

~Rose
kateTV
On sunday, is mothers day, so I will be with my daughter some where, might go to tropical island... next week I hope to come to brunch.

I would really like to make it for the Thursday night meet-up. When and Where is the question??

"Happy Mothers day to all mothers on TT.."

kate
jtw
Oh, right, mother's day. I guess we can table it for a week then. (Although I'm heading to the airport Sunday the 20th, so I can only do Saturday next weekend.)
phoenix-rose
Ok I'd say saturday next weekend for sure. I'm there. (wherever there may be...)

~Rose
kateTV
Saturday would be good aswell...for me smile.gif
oldsoul
Hi everybody,

Being a newbie to this circle may I make a suggestion though?

QUOTE
jtw
Why don't you take the "coffee baton" for two weeks from now, and propose a location (preferably non-smoking) closer to you?

O.k. I propose a place for Saturday 2nd of June (depending on the weather of course). It’s called “Hasenheide park (smoking no smoking as you like) and the outdoor café there

QUOTE
jatindutt
but i would really appreciate if you can provide with the name of that cafe too!!!

is called “Hasen-Schänke (meaning hare-tavern).

QUOTE
martinh69
... perhaps there should be an easier way of finding you,

I hope the map below gives you some clue to where it is.

QUOTE

Am I missing something here, or is part of the point of these meet-ups to find and share interesting new places? If so, I can't quite find the logic in choosing to have coffee at a global chain in the middle of a tourist trap. … But given the choice I think we'd all rather explore and support local businesses…

I agree. Besides that there is great scenery all around and no tourists far and wide (except us of course cool.gif ).

QUOTE
phoenix-rose
when the weather gets nice, we should do a TT Berliner picnic in the park or something.

Then I really *could* bring my pup.

Side note - anyone seen Pan's Labyrinth yet? I'm dying to see it.

Cosy picnic spots guaranteed.

Of course you could. Expect some company.

Next-door is an open-air cinema. Friday the 1st of June they have “Pan’s Labyrinth on the programme. Starting at 9.45 pm. I might join you. Saturday have a look here.

I have the little girl that I look after (shes 22 months) on Sat and I may bring her.

One minute walk from the café you will find a safe adventure playground for kids of all ages. 22 months might be a bit young though.

There is even a little zoo in the "Hasenheide".

QUOTE

I know it can take some legwork to find good places for these events -- regardless of whether it's Thursday drinks or Saturday coffee -- but again, I've always seen that as part of the point. And I enjoyed spending an evening last month walking around my neighborhood, popping into new bars so I could pick one for Thursday drinks.

Well, some legwork is needed but they sell one of the best German Bock-Bier you can find: “Einbecker Urbock. A bottle for 1.50 Euro only.

kateTV

QUOTE
... seems senseless everyone bring their own sausages for example?

Yes. There is “Bockwurst or “Wiener and “Kartoffelsalat available and coffee and cakes of course.

So who is interested?

phoenix-rose
Sounds interesting - but we're talking for next sat/sun - the weekend of May 19 and 20 right?

My only concern would be weather.

~Rose

EDIT - nevermind - you're thinking 2 weeks out... the weekend of June 2 & 3.

What about the 2 weekends in between?
gooner_gal
@oldsoul. I like the idea of the Hasenheide (won't be here though) - it really has become a nice park. The only thing with the open air cinema ist that most of the films are in German...
jtw
Yeah, that's the advantage of the Freiluftkino Kreuzberg--all their films are in the original (English, French, Finnish...) with German subtitles. Saw "V for Vendetta" there last summer. It'd be nice to wait until it stops raining every day though...

As for this Saturday, do we want to do brunch or just coffee? I know Saturday brunch is possible...
gooner_gal
@ Rose - how about Karneval der Kulturen: Weekend 25-28.May.2007 on the 27th?
oldsoul
@ rose @gooner_gal

This weekend might be a bit early for a nice outing. I’d rather give the weather gods a few more days to change their mind. Being not yet prescient, I will suggest an alternative indoors for Saturday the 2nd though and post it here.

Concerning the movies (English or German), I’ll come back to you after having made some inquiries.

Guess the weekend of the 27th is booked for everybody because of “Karneval der Kulturen. Don’t miss it. Great fun, great entertainment!! Incidentally, best place to watch the show is along “Hasenheide street (with same name as park). It starts 12.30 noon. Be there on time to get a good place. When the weather is good there is not much space left on the sides of the street.
phoenix-rose
JTW - I'd say brunch or coffee would be fine on Saturday - pick one and run with it.

gooner_gal - Went to Karneval der Kulturen last year. It was alot of fun, though I wished I would have brought my earplugs. (way too loud). I do hope to go this year, but I'm not sure which day yet.

It's a madhouse though - I will admit that! Maybe it'd be good to meet up for something early then head over - depending on how many wanted to go over to that. I think that it would be too difficult to try and meet people in the middle of a crowd. (I remember what happened on New Year's Eve!!)

~Rose
sghosh
hi i am new to berlin and to this forum...is there a decision on the weekend then...i m dying to meet some english speaking people ...
speedygonzi
Hello, I am new as well and planning to come to this weekend meet up -let me know where/when
Speedy
schnucki21
i would like for a meetup too.
jtw
Okay, how about this place at noon:

http://www.cafe-november.de/

Their menu is annoyingly not on their website yet, but it got a good writeup here:

http://berlinbrunching.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html

For people worried about the indecision, let's say we're definitely going to go somewhere in Prenzlauer Berg at noon on Saturday, and we're just sorting out the details.
GoodGrief
If there's still room, I'd like to come as well.
phoenix-rose
Looks good to me JTW.

And welcome new folks - there's always room available at the trough. laugh.gif

Just beware that some people guard their beer more than my dog does his food!

I think both JTW and I have our pictures up - but if you need any more contact details or something funny on the table so you can find us better, please let me know!

~Rose
GoodGrief
So we should be looking for the group that's huddled over their beers. laugh.gif See you Saturday!
jtw
So we may have enough people that we should think about making a reservation. I count six so far. Anybody else lurking but planning to attend?
kateTV
hey john, ..please count me in,... smile.gif by the looks of it your going to be the rooster in amongst the hens, unless, ..
phoenix-rose
Eh John'll love that Kate. wub.gif What guy doesn't love being the center of attention from beautiful women?!? laugh.gif

~Rose
kateTV
Im sorry that I will miss another english-round in the best part of germany, "berlin" cool.gif (work-calls smile.gif )
I was really looking forward to meeting other TT's...

@john, ... have a safe trip. !
sghosh
hey id like ot come too...can someone give me some basic directions and how to recognise the group or anyone...? i think i'll be easy to spot...ill be the indian looking girl...we are very few here...do let me know...
jtw
Here are the vital stats:

Cafe November
Husemannstraße 15
Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg

It's about a block north of the Kollwitzplatz. How to get there depends on where you're coming from, but if you put the address into http://www.s-bahn-berlin.de/fahrplanauskun...outenplaner.htm you should get good directions. It's between the U2 subway and M2 tram lines.

Remember that the U2 is replaced by buses between Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and Schönhauser Allee, so you might be happier taking the M1 to U Senefelder Platz or the M2 to Marienburger Straße.

I'll try to wear my England cricket sunhat.
jtw
Okay, we have a reservation for approximately 8 people (I'm +2 for those confused by the math) at noon. It's a nice day, so I asked for a table outside. The reservation is under "Whelan", although they didn't seem to need a name...

oldsoul
No problem. Let's have it on Sunday 3rd then. smile.gif
phoenix-rose
So.. I think summer has officially hit.

This weekend there's alot going on - a brief list:

Culture parade (Karnival Der Kulturen thread)
Potsdam's Renaissance Faire (Potsdam's Volga Park)
Psychomania Rumble - Psychobilly music festival (Potsdam's Linden Park)

Anyhow, I was trying to figure out where we might want to do coffee this week. My thought is somewhere up near the Karnival der Kulturen area on Sat. Then, for those whom want to - head to the Karnival.

Thoughts? (Not familiar with the area so open to suggestions.)

~Rose

PS - I think we have the weekend of June 3rd covered - looks like instead of coffee meetup, it'll be a cook out meetup in the park.
oldsoul
“Summertime
And the livin' is easy,
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high.
Oh yo' daddy's rich
An' yo' ma is good lookin'
So hush, little baby,
Don't you cry.

One of these mornin's,
You's gonna rise up singin'
Then you'll spread yo' wings
An' you'll take to the sky.
But till that mornin',
There's ain't nothin' can harm you
With your Daddy an' Mummy
Standin' by.

Summertime and the livin' is easy…

so let’s go to the countryside this Saturday,
where the hares live and the flowers bloom.
How could I forget there is a little lake nearby.

Karnival der Kulturen
is mainly the procession on Sunday.
Saturday we are free to roam the “Hasenheide
chasing butterflies after having had enough
of coffee, cake, Bockwurst and Bockbier…

My suggestion therefore we meet in “Hasenheide
at 16:00 hours this Saturday.
For Sunday 3rd June I have found us
another nice place under the sky.

O.k.?

GoodGrief
I'd definitely be up for something this weekend, but am a bit confused now as to whether it's the Karnival thing or drunkenly chasing bunnies.
phoenix-rose
ha ha ha Um.. well, if we go to the park, then it would be Saturday.

I guess the better part of the karnival den kulturen is Sunday (when they have the parade, tons of beer, and the ear plugs are a must) although there are things (booths/etc) going on during Saturday too.

OldSoul - where were you thinking for the following weekend? I know that JTW, TravelNate and I were thinking to do a cookout at this park on the weekend of June 3... so... I guess it would depend. I don't want to move it to the park this weekend and then "kill" the idea of the cookout.

OldSoul - where were you thinking for the following weekend?

@ rose

For the following weekend I thought of Görlitzer Park in Kreuzberg. We can sit on the veranda of " Cafe Edelweiss" and go inside if the weather changes. Don't want to post details yet. Might confuse people. Cookout is possible too, not so spacy the park though.

Main reason why I suggested the change is that "Hasenschänke" place can get a bit crowded on Sundays. Anyway "Hasenheide" is good for more than one go!

So let's leave it as it is: Hasenheide this weekend Saturday at 16:00 hours, Görlitzer Park next weekend Sunday 3rd.

Here one's again the map...

phoenix-rose
Sounds good - who all is meeting up?

From last posting...

Let's meet at the outdoor café there
is called “Hasen-Schänke (meaning hare-tavern).

Also, from looking at the map...

I think that's the Hermannpl Ubahn station - look at the U7 and the U8 lines to get there.

I'll bring my pup - he can chase bunnies... although I doubt he would.

Last Call !

Yes, it's hard to come by.

No, I don't get paid for putting up the picture.

See you later... tongue.gif
vita123
Hi, I'm new to this forum and interested in meeting up this afternoon. Do I just look for a group of English speakers at the cafe or is there a place you all plan to meet?
oldsoul
Just look for the sign "Toytown" on one of the tables or listen to us chattering away ... laugh.gif

I think cookout is kind of the point, so maybe we should go someplace more cookout-appropriate than a cafe.
phoenix-rose
Agreed - perhaps someplace that has an already established grill that we can just throw some bricks on and get it going?

If not, anyone have a small portable they're willing to bring?

I think a cookout is perfect in this weather. Here's my thoughts -

Each person bring their own meat (steak/burgers/wurst/etc.) and drinks (beer, coke, etc.) for themselves.

Then, volunteer to bring one of the following to share:

Salad
Dessert
Bread
"fixins" (katsup, mustard,bbq sauce, etc)
Throway stuff (plates, forks,spoons etc)

And whatever else I forgot.

So... Anyone for turning this week's Coffee meetup into a Cookout meetup on Sunday afternoon?!?

~Rose

** alternative would be to turn the cookout idea into a "picnic in the park" idea**
