I saw Knut today. Yep, it was madness! I stood in line from 11:45 am til 12:45 pm to buy the tickets, and then again from 1:20 til 2:40 pm, just to see him for like 10 minutes. It WAS worth it, but seriously, it'll be that much WORSE at the weekend. blink.gif

Some of my Knut pics... smile.gif

k I have to say it...

Amazing how that can be so cute on some beasts, but not on others. laugh.gif

awwwwwwwwww...cuter than a bug's ear (as we say in my part of the world!) Thanks for sharing the pics!

ew he's dirty.. i dont want to see a dirty bear...
Kat78
Now that's a silly statement. Of course he looks prettier when he's clean but a baby bear needs to play in the sand! cool.gif

Belle...

You're welcome! It was so wonderful to see that little furball with my own eyes! Cutest thing ever (aside from my dog! wink.gif )!!

So are some of us still game to scope out the zoo and see the madness for ourselves?

Let's nail down coffee 16:00 at Cafe Einstein (Kurfürstenstrasse 58, U Nollendorfplatz) at any rate.
phoenix-rose
I'm still game for the baby bear outing too. Noon sounds good - where to meet?

~Rose
jtw
I've never been to the Zoo, so I don't know a good landmark near the entrance. I could suggest some meeting place in the train station.
phoenix-rose
JTW!! You've NEVER been to the ZOO?!?

Ok well we are def remedying that.

If you get out at Zoo station, there's a movie theater right by the exit of the sbahn when you follow signs to the "zoo". We can meet out in front of there... or out by the church wilhelm (it's the bombed out church a block or two up the street - hard to miss... I don't know the name/address. You pick since I do know that area a little bit.

~R

PS I pmed you my handy
Scottagain
Hmm so what did u guys decide? I wanna see Knut as well. So who, where and when?

Scott
phoenix-rose
Humm... ok so.. Scott, JTW, if you're not making a call here, then I'd say that the best landmark will be to meet by the bombed out church (tall, hard to miss)- Basically, go to the Zoologischer station, and follow the signs as if you're going to the zoo. You'll need to cross the street. If you go past the bombed out church, there's a little plaza with a fountain, and a KFC and an irish pub and other shops inside.

I'm thinking that if we meet in that little plaza near the fountain (why always the fountains with me...) at Noon, we should be good to go.

Meanwhile, you both know me, so yep, as always, if you don't, check the profile for a pic and be alert for a red ski jacket.

Sounds great Rose, I'll try to drag this other american I told u about with me as well.

Scott
phoenix-rose
Hey Scott - what happened to the other "American" who was supposed to show ? :-P

Knut was soo cute and so were the rest of the baby animals. I'll put together the vids/pics and post a link.

Thanks John for organizing.

It was great to see Knut in person, if only so I can tell my relatives I have. After all the horror stories, it was actually relatively easy. We just showed up at the viewing area at 13:00, an hour ahead of time, at which point there were maybe a dozen people milling around the barriers. The crowd filled in behind us and the line snaked off into the distance, but if you're willing to wait an hour (which I guess you have to do anyway if you end up in the line and they let you in later), it's not that hard. The catch is that everyone only gets to see him for about 10 minutes before they shuffle you along and let a new group of people come see the show. Still, I'd do it again. I have some pictures, but I believe they're pretty lousy given that we had a front-row view. Not that there's a shortage of Knut pictures anyway.

Knut the Cute and other babies at the Berlin Zoo

There's the video of the day yesterday, including all the babies at the zoo.

~Rose
Kat78
Thanks for sharing that cute video, Rose! Very enjoyable. smile.gif
phoenix-rose
Most welcome. It was a fun day, and it was fun to put the vid together. Plus, since they have more than just the polar bear there, it was kind of nice to make sure the others got their fair share of coverage too.
jtw
I can't top Rose's video, but here are some Knut pics (I took a bunch of non-Knut pictures as well, which I may add later):

Kat78
Very nice pics, John! Aside from the "dumbass" maybe! Haha. tongue.gif
phoenix-rose
Aww! JTW, those pics came out so much better than mine - that guy who was standing in front of me (in the dumbass picture) was really in the WRONG place. Even Scott's pics had a hard time coming out because of him.

~Rose
jtw
Yeah, I didn't realize when I named the files that the filenames would be preserved, but as Rose implied, that was the dumbass who was standing in the kiddy section taking pictures and blocking everyones' view.

Now that Saturday's cricket match is irrelevant, anyone got any good coffee ideas? It'd be good to be somewhere near Potsdamer Platz so we could see a movie after.
Kat78
I'll meet a friend at 4 pm, at Potsdamer Platz, so I can't do Saturday... Didn't Kate(TV) propose a BBQ in her backyard on Sunday? wink.gif
kateTV
This sunday wont work, ... would prefer if it got A LOT warmer... But I'm keen to meet for brunch back in The Bird, .. what do the rest of the Berliners think?
Kat78
I have to work til 2 am Saturday night, so I can't say for sure if I can make it to the Sunday brunch thingie. BUT I will certainly try. Would be great to get to know you a bit better, Kate! smile.gif

I was assuming we were waiting for the good weather to return before grilling--which is a great idea BTW.

Wouldn't mind a bit of variety, although I'm certainly fond of The Bird. (And this week is the last time to go there before the zitty feature comes out and the place is mobbed cool.gif )
VenusInFurs
I'm cool with the bird again this week...I've been craving eggs benny ever since last sunday!

You should bring your friend to coffee. wink.gif

Actually, I was trying to come up with a place for coffee near Potsdamer Platz so interested parties could go to the Prairie Home Companion movie afterwards. Someone mentioned an "Austrian place" in the Potsdamer Platz Arkaden. Is that the Wiener Café?
kateTV
BUGGER!! I cant make it this week. Im on standby, .. and if they call I have only 20minutes to get in the office. sad.gif

Nah, I haven't seen her in almost a year, so I think we'll need some privacy. smile.gif

Maybe it's some place at the lowest level where most of the food stuff is? I'm really not sure.

Awww, that's too bad! I guess I won't make it either - also because of work.
VenusInFurs
If we still decided to do brunch and liked last weeks option, Hazelwood might be good too!
kateTV
is the place also in P.berg,... if you had a place closer to mitte I could still join for brunch...
jtw
Hazelwood is at Choriner Str. 72, 10119 Berlin, which is officially still Mitte, at least according to the S-Bahn Berlin trip planner. Transit to M1 Zionskirchplatz, U8 Rosenthaler Platz or U2 Senefelderplatz.
VenusInFurs
Ya it's sort of just on the border. It's a nice place.
kateTV
is that the place then for tomorrow in Chorinerstr, all down hill from there.. I will try and make it then smile.gif
jtw
11:00 seemed to be too early for everyone last week. Does someone want to propose a later time?
VenusInFurs
I wouldn't want to do it much later than 1 because I have MAJOR housework to do...noon would be ideal so then I don't have to make coffee and starve myself until I eat brunch, haha! But if it's too early I'll understand and try to get stuff done in the morning instead.
jtw
Noon works for me. Wanna call it?
VenusInFurs
Sure thing, hehe!
Ok noon at Hazelwood it is! see you guys tomorrow?
slara1961
Hi...My name is Scott Lara. My 20 yr old son will be in Berlin on May 4th. How can he meet up with english speaking folks there?
phoenix-rose
Hi all!

I'm back from Egypt. So, what's the plan for this weekend? Coffee meet-up or Brunch??

Slara1961 - once a place has been established, protocol is to just show up and look for a group of english speakers. I have a pic in my profile, so do several others of us.

~Rose

I can't do the usual time on Saturday, but I could do something Sunday. I think we're still trying to get Kate to propose a BBQ. wink.gif
kateTV
b-b-q? tongue.gif if we are going to do a b-b-q then next weekend. not this weekend, Im on call to work..

Would be great to know how many people interested... seems senseless everyone bring their own sausages for example? Bakery next to me, so no problem there. I would suggest everyone bring some form of salat and something to drink. ... and a chair although a blanket would be enough..

Suggests, input are welcome...

@rose, welcome back, all tanned and ready to work again??

kateTV
oomcha
I'm totally up for a BBQ next weekend.
