hello, I'm Myles. Id like to organise a some hiking down in Garmisch this coming saturday the 24th. We would get the train down which costs 21 euros(return) if we buy a bayern ticket. from Garmisch station its only about 15 minutes walk to the trail heads. I dont think we would be doing really strenuous hikes and probably wouldnt go too high as there is still some snow. Ive been down there once already and its spectacular. Germanys highest peak is nearby and there are countless numbers of trails we can do.

If you are interested just post a reply or even PM me. It would be nice to get at least about 5 people to come along. If I get some interest I would like to start up a more regular meeting. Looking forward to your replys!

Hi Myles, I'm potentially interested. I organised a hike last year; ten people showed up despite the fact that it had rained almost continuously for ten days beforehand, so there's definitely interest. I didn't get around to organising any more though. However, the Alpine weather forecast isn't particularly good for this weekend and there will potentially be too much snow underfoot as well. Maybe in the summer...

I would also be interested, but under slightly warmer and drier weather conditions.
nataras
I too would be interested for some treks not only Garmish but also other places in Germany, Austria Swiss etc.
Yeti
I'm interested, not definite for this Saturday but it would be good if it became a regular thing.
nataras
As suggested by Myles we should form a group of around 5 people and should start up with regular meetings to decide for places.

Bear in mind that there already is a club for English-speaking hikers in Munich, namely the Munich Wanderers. That's not to say that Toytown can't organise its own hikes, but this offers some extra choice.
MrD
Unless their policy has changed, the Wanderers require you to be a DAV member to join a hike, see under 'Programme' on their web page.
Small Town Boy
True, but that's no bad thing. The DAV maintain the trails that we use, and membership includes rescue insurance, so you won't have to pay tens of thousands of euros to have your arse hauled off the mountain.

hello everyone, firstly thanks for all your replies and your interest in hiking. it looks at this stage that this weekend might be off but I do intend without a doubt
organise plenty of hikes throughout the spring/summer/Autumn. as one of you suggested we can explore the possibility of going down to Austria or even to Switzerland for some hikes. any ideas would be welcome. Im still not too familiar with the hiking situation and whats available as I just arrived here.
I know for sure that Garmisch has plenty to keep us busy until we do find some other places!
I havnt heard of Munich Wanderers until now, but theres no harm in having another group to give everyone a bit of variety. speaking of group names,
Ive come up with "Bavarian Explorers" - hope you like it!(if you dont-tough luck!)I know we will probably go outside Bavaria but it sounds cool...at least I think so!

in regards to DAV...Im not sure exactly what that is but Im guessing some kind of hiking organisation. in regards to safety, I thinking we are going to do hikes that are of not too high a difficulty. I dont want to get too serious with ropes and all the rest of it-it takes the enjoyment out of it. furthermore, I think it should be an inclusive group so anyone can come along and do the hike, not just hardened hikers.

Im thinking of organising an informal meeting about next thursday at about 7:00 or so just to get people together and discuss some ideas. I was thinking Schwabing could be good as its a fairly central location. how does that sound to everyone?by the way are there any good cafes around there someone could recommend we go to?
OK well thats enough from me, over to you guys. Im looking forward again to your responses.

To be honest, I think you're jumping the gun a bit, especially as (by your own admission) you don't really have any experience of Alpine hiking. My advice would be to do what I did last year: plan a route, and a meeting time and place, and post the information about ten days beforehand. Also, if you think that Garmisch is the be-all and end-all of Alpine hiking, then you're in for a nice surprise. I would rate Garmisch as about the worst place to start a hike from - not especially attractive and too low down (600m - it would take most the day just to get above the tree line).

But don't let me dampen your enthusiasm - I'm just a grump who likes to see things done in a particular way.

Small town boy, I guess there is always one person who has to try and be negative. firstly, If you actually read my message youll notice that I never said I had no experience Alpine hiking, I just dont have experience in Germany. As for planning something out, as you might have noticed I suggested a meeting next week to do so. I dont know where you come up with this information about Garmisch. I have been there and I know it has to be one of the best hiking spots I have ever seen.

Hello everyone, It looks like this week the weather has taken a turn for the worse so it looks like I might have to postpone the trip for a few weeks until it heats up again. Ill make another post when things are looking up again weather wise. Id just like to thank you all for your interest and positive response(except one person) to my hiking plan. I think this summer could really be good if we could get some people together in the mountains.
If anyone wishes to talk to me more about hiking or any ideas that you have feel free to send me a PM any time!
I look forward to hearing from you!
