Joseph Pilates was born near Düsseldorf in 1880. During WWI he was interned in England as an enemy alien. It was here that he developed a novel kind of exercise routine which could be practiced from within the confines of a prison cell. After the war he moved to the U.S. and promoted his fitness technique to the wider public. The Pilates Method, as it became known, combines spiritual and physical training. During the past decade it has caught on and become extremely popular throughout the world. The latest enthusiast is the dusky Babs Becker, a Munich resident and ex-wife of tennis champ Boris. At 11am this Wednesday she'll be presenting her new book, My Pilates Programme, in Munich's Mandarin Oriental.
