Occasionally open to the public

In 1902 huge water drainage tunnels were built beneath Schwabing. Nowadays the tunnels remain mostly dry. They are only used during catastrophic rainfall. Normally the tunnels are closed to the public. This Saturday however, as part of the Long Night of the Museums, there will be guided tours of these 'secret' underground passages. ...

Entrance to the tunnels is somewhere near the corner of Eichingerstrasse and Ungererstrasse (U6 to Alte Heide).

Saturday 16th October 2004.
The tours are every 30 minutes from 7pm til 10pm.
Pre-reservation is required.

Update: According to the website the tours this weekend are now fully booked already. This seems to be one of the most popular attractions of the 'Long Night'! Maybe you can still squeeze onto a tour by calling: 089 3061 0045

Failing that, there are tours at other times of the year also. Watch this space.

Yes, yes, yes - it's not a proper city until it has secret tunnels.

No, no, no - it's not a proper city until it has tunnels filled with muggers and villains. Until then, this remains "Toytown".

Not very secret now are they. Are they going to rename them... The Not Very Secret Tunnels of Munich?!?!?

well, MVV maintains a whole network of secret tunnels ...well, maintenance tunnels ...under the city of Munich as do companies like Siemens then there's a couple of nuclear bunkers I have worked in ...one at Tuecherpark with a tunnel that goes under the Isar. In fact, I once got stuck under the Theriesenwiese in a U-Bahn siding because I was so engrossed in my book and didn't pay attention to the 'Endstation' message ...it wasn't 'til the driver shut the engine off down some side-tunnel ..well, let's call it a secret tunnel ...that I poo-ed myself ...fortunately, he was walking to the other end of the train and called me an arse or something before starting up a couple of minutes later and setting off again.. like...

Did anyone go on this tour? I was out of town last weekend. Any idea when if they are running anymore tours?
