Viktualienmarkt

Fresh produce market in central Munich

The Viktualienmarkt is the old market in the center of Munich. Here you can by the freshest fruit and vegetables in the whole city. The market has a reputation of having higher prices than your average supermarket but in actual fact many goods here are cheaper than elsewhere. Wandering round the market is a delight as you are greeted with smell of spices, cheeses, and fresh veg.

The Viktualienmarkt is located in the very center of Munich. Just three minutes walk from Marienplatz - behind the old townhall.

There is almost nothing cheaper at the Vikkie-Markt unless you normally shop in the Hertie/Karstadt gourmet sections, OR
you're a long-time regular customer at a particular stand. That said, the quality and selection are usually better than the usual city supermarkets, and you can find a lot of specialty items from multiple potato varieties to horse meat to organic food grown by a co-op.

Orignially a farmer's market, few items are actually grown/raised/made by the sellers there, but there are exceptions. Look for hand-drawn signs which have the word "eigene" but realise that this usually refers to a particular item and not the entire selection of goods at the stand.

It's definitely a place to go but be prepared for some sticker shock.

it's all a big rip-off if you ask me.

The point of viktualienmarkt is not to be cheap, or to attract customers who are interested in cheap food. The aim is quality, and to attract people who care about what they eat. If you're happy with a 4-euro industrially farmed 'fresh' chicken from Penny Markt then all power to you. You just won't understand this place at all. After all, why spend 50% more and get a free range chicken even if it is clearly better in every regard?

My tips for not getting ripped off and getting exceptional food are the Toelzer Kas Laden for cheese, Metzgerei Eisenreich for uncooked meats, Wild und Gefluegel Poerrer for poultry, and the shop next door for cold meats and pate. I shop in these places every week.

That said, some say you can get equvalent quality for less money in other places, but they're not all together. And leave the fruit & veg as it's over priced and no better than any other careful greengrocer. There are many exotic varieties here though. Think of VM as a very high quality, expensive open air supermarket, with your shopping tendencies recorded by half of Japan in the summer.

As HellesAngel says, you need to shop smart. If you are buying imported produce or prepared products you are better off going to a supermarket, or to an ethnic market. If you are buying less "glamorous" stuff the price is often very reasonable given the quality.

As far as I've been able to find, this is the only game in town for fresh seafood. Expensive but excellent quality. Won't kill your wallet if you go for less fancy stuff like sardines, anchovies, mussels.

Rabbit, duck, chicken are all very reasonable and much better quality than anything I've bought in a store, even bio. Best cheese in town and you can pay a little or a lot depending on what you choose. Meat is expensive but again, excellent quality. Just buy smart, ya know? Learn how to cook the less expensive cuts, learn how to waste as little as possible and you can do very well for yourself.

I am there every week and getting my Spa ingredients at the one and only Asian shop in Viktualienmarkt. "MAILING" is one of the trusted asian shop for fresh stuffs and perhaps it is also one of the few asian grocery shop that DO NOT SELL expired stuffs.

Unlike other veggies shop within VM, at "Mailing" you are able to CHOOSE which veggie you want.

My main reason is that when shopping along the same stretch of building from the Lebkuchen, Mailing, Tee Laden, Wine house and also a Art gallery. Their rental will be used for supporting retired famous German celebrities who are not able to live on their own financially.
