Musical: West Side Story - Munich

May/Jun.2004 at the Deutsches Theater

Editor Bob
West Side Story, the legendary Leonard Bernstein classic of star-crossed lovers Maria and Tony began its six-week run at Munich's Deutches Theater on Friday (30th April 2004). Based on Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, Bernstein captivatingly weaves a timeless, musical tale of forbidden love by setting it to the back-drop of 1950's America. But instead of Italy's rivalling families setting the stage (remember the Montague's and Capulet's?), this story revolves around Maria, the daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants and Tony, from a polish family, who meet and fall in love. ...

Bernstein's music sets the back-drop for the fast-paced original choreography of Jerome Robbins, where quick-stepping beats and frantic dancing mimic the desperation of the rival gangs the "Jets" and "Sharks". Hits such as "America" relay the appeal of life in American and the battle-call "When You're a Jet" describes the allure of gang life in 1950's New York. Of course not to be forgotten is the classic ballad "Maria" or the hopeful duet "Somewhere" tugging at your heart-strings.

This actual Broadway production is in original English, but for benefit of the German audience and unlike previous English-language productions at the theatre, will be shown with German subtitles. Tickets for 2 hr. 45 minute show can be purchased online at deutsches-theater.de or at the box office. The last performance date is June 13. Tickets range from EUR20 to EUR60.

what is meant by german subtitles? is this a live performance or on screen?
Elfenstar
It is a live performance! Imagine Broadway, but in Munich. And like most opera's which are sung in the original language and make use of over-titles, this performance is sung and spoke in English, but will be showing German subtitles somewhere project near the stage.
