The Munich IMAX cinema is currently screening a compilation of film footage shot on the International Space Station. I went last week and have to report back: Absolutely Awesome! Being IMAX, the screen is huuuuuge, and in 3D (you're given special glasses). Honestly, this was the most worthwhile 8.50 Euro I've spent on entertainment in a long time. I was gutted when the film ended after only 45 minutes. I could watch the blue-green Earth spinning slowly beneath for hours on end. The scenery is truely breathtaking. ...read more

The movie is educational too. I went into the film thinking that the ISS is a complete waste of effort. I believed it to be nothing more than a big tin can going nowhere other than round and round in orbit. I came out, however, thinking that the ISS is the most impressive and worthwhile human endeavour that we're engaged in right now. Seeing the land masses beneath, without artificial national borders, it puts everything into perspective. Makes you realise just how insignificant all our earthly troubles really are.
Space has got to be the greates adventure. No wonder that millionaire business tycoons are prepared to shell out $20m for a week up there (Dennis Tito, Mark Shuttleworth). For the rest of us, this IMAX film is a pretty good substitute. You really do feel like you're there, on board the ISS. You easily share in the awe of the astronauts too. Throughout the film they're larking around in weightlessness, non-stop grins on their faces, eyes bright with excitement. They're luvin' it!
Even if you're only vaguely interested in space exploration, or you care about humanity's place in the universe, then you absolutely must go and see this film. It is showing at least until the end of March 2004.
