Uschi Glas is one of the best known of Munich's celebrity circle. Indeed, throughout the whole of Germany she is very famous. Now, you may not give two hoots about who she is, how famous she is, or what her latest self-promotion stunts might be. However, seeing as she does appear in the local papers on an almost daily basis I think it is worthwhile that you should have a quick primer about her life. So read this, inwardly digest, and then you needn't concern yourself with her ever again! ;-) She will be appearing in the media even more than usual in the coming month for three reasons. One, her biography will be published on 16th February. Two, she is now rumoured to be dating the best friend of her ex-husband. Three, on March 2nd it'll be her 60th birthday.
Uschi Glas is an actress. She was born on 2nd March 1944 in the south Bavarian town of Landau. She is the youngest of four sisters. In 1964 she moved to Munich to work as a secretary. Quite by chance she found herself recruited to play a very small role in a film called The Sinister Monk. No it wasn't a porno, but a murder mystery drama. Her big acting breakthrough came in 1966 when she was given a leading role in the film Zur Sache Schätzchen. For years after this film she was affectionately known in public as Schätzchen.
After hitting the big time Uschi Glas went on to appear in numerous feature films, TV films, and TV drama series. Her biggest TV series, and indeed the most watched series in the history of German TV ever, was "Anna Maria - eine Frau geht ihren Weg". This show was broadcast on SAT1 and seen by up to 10 million viewers.
In 1981 she married the film producer Bernhard Tewaag. The couple had 3 children together - two boys and a daughter called Julia. In November 2001 rumours surfaced that Bernd might be having an affair, or affairs, with one or numerous much younger women. Uschi confronted him over this but he strenuously denied everything and the matter was forgotten. Until February 2002, that is, when suddenly photos appeared on the front pages of all Munich local papers showing Bernd holding hands with his new girlfriend. Shortly after the photos were published Bernd filed for divorce and the Munich papers went into overdrive indulging in weeks of Uschi schadenfreude.
For two months after the divorce Uschi went into hiding. She high-tailed it to Kitzbühel (the ski resort of choice for Munich's rich and famous) and cancelled all public engagements. Now, in 2004, she's very much back in the limelight. A biography titled, "Mit einem Lächeln" will be released on 16th February 2004. On February 27th a new TV series will start called "Zwei am großen See". Also, as reported today, she is now dating the famous Munich lawyer, Wolfgang Seybold. Uschi may be a star from the 60's but it looks like she'll be around for a long time still to come.
