Update: Since this article was written Duo have ceased operations.

Here is the original article for historical purposes:

Fancy a highland fling in the Scottish capital one weekend? Travelling quickly from Edinburgh to Munich always used to be problematic as there were no direct flights. But soon there will be! From 28th March 2004 a new airline called Duo will be launching the first daily route direct from Edinburgh to Munich (and back, hopefully). Duo is a low-cost airline with one-way flights for as little as €70. Incidently, Edinburgh is one of the cities officially twinned with Munich. The others being Cincinnati, Bordeaux, Harare, Kiew, Sapporo, and Verona.

Duo is a new European airline flying between Birmingham (where it is based) and Edinburgh and 15 continental European cities. The airline was created in June 2003 after a management buy-out of Maersk Air Ltd. Maersk operated for over 10 years under a British Airways franchise agreement from Birmingham. Duo now maintains it's own fleet of 8 aircraft and employs over 300 people.

The cities flown to from Edinburgh are: Birmingham, Geneva, Milan, Nice, Oslo, and Zurich.

The cities flown to from Birmingham are: Berlin, Cologne, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Geneva, Gothenburg, Helsinki, Lyon, Nice, Oslo, Stockholm, Stuttgart, and Vienna.

I've heard a rumour that British Airways will be starting a direct flight to Glasgow in competition?

Duo are offering 69.99GBP single, return also 69.99GBP(at the moment!) including airport taxes.

I've flown with BA for less, the only draw back was changing in B'ham or B'stol which really wasn't a hassle as it was only 30-40 min between flights and the luggage is booked straight through.

As of 1st May 2004 Duo have now ceased operations. That didn't last long, did it?!!

This is what it says on the website:

"Bill Dawson and Andrew Peters, partners of Deloitte, were appointed Joint Administrators to Duo Airways Limited ("duo") on 1 May 2004. They act as agents of the company and without personal liability. Following this appointment Duo has ceased to trade and there will be no further flights."

"Passengers who have booked flights, which are now cancelled, are unlikely to be protected by ATOL. However, if they have paid by credit card, the amount was more than £100 and that credit card is issued under an agreement between a credit card company and an individual, sole trader or partnership, then the credit card issuer may be responsible under the Consumer Credit Act for giving a refund."
