Irony defined

QUOTE
Environment activists piled thousands of dead fish at the foot of Berlin's biggest tourist attraction, the Brandenburg Gate, Tuesday in a demonstration against over-fishing and pollution in the North Sea.

"It's not the fish but the politics that really stink," said Bjoern Jettka, press officer for Germany's Greenpeace.

On a hot August day at peak tourist season, visitors to the famous neo-classical landmark were greeted by the smell of 11,000 rotting fish displayed on a 100 meter long table under banners bearing the slogan "Don't waste life!."

11,000 fish rotting in the hot summer sunshine? Sounds like every market I've been to in Malaysia.

What's the irony here? Guess those fish were dead anyway and the message greenpeace sends into the world is probably more valuable (at least it is for greenpeace) than simply eating the fish.

Such an 'protest' action the message carries often a long way in the media, even to the point it's posted on TT wink.gif

ok, I think I'll have to learn to read more carefully ph34r.gif

Well, it's stupid that they went and killed more sea life, but the point was, that is what the big fishing ships do. They indiscriminatly suck up all sea life, then throw the stuff they don't want back into the sea. DEAD though, not alive. Greenpeace's point: "Some 700,000 tons of dead fish are thrown back into the sea each year -- this waste problem will affect future generations if no one takes action" Personally I think there are more effective ways to make your point, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

Greenpeace have ALWAYS been one of the worst things for the environment. Money grubbers basically, chasing issues that are minor as far as the environment goes but open peoples wallets. They are concerned about endangered species, fair enough, but noone hunts endangered species anymore. They are even concerned about non-endangered species, but thats not an environmental issue at all, its more of a philosophical issue.

True issues of concern are the levels of energy we use, excessive human population growth, pollution and packaging. Its a pity that the real issues make people feel guilty and cute little animals make people donate, and greenpeace would rather have money than affect real change.

Plus they would just look like hypocrites campaigning against excessive packaging as they do make a fair bit selling posters and bumper stickers.

If you care about the environment, NEVER donate to greenpeace. Simply watch what you buy, reduce how much energy you consume, and try and recycle.

700,000 tons of dead fish thrown back, which otherwise could be ground up and sold as fertilizer, aqaurium fish food, purina zoo chow, etc...

They don't need Greenpeace, they need Donald Trump wink.gif

I have always been against green peace!
Really they are just out for money and publicity and the real work is done by the others who i freely give money to.
Green peace will not receive one cent from me!
Do you know what that "event" cost them, the ppl, the boat and the whole organisation. what a waste of member's money.

Mountain gorillas ?

White rhinos?

We hunt cod. Thats endangered. Asian "medicine" still produces a rip roaring trade in ANYTHING endangered, and the demand for shark fin soup is crushing all sorts of shark species.

Wow, I wish I lived in your happy, happy world! What a ridiculous thing to say. Most endangered species are in that position precisely because of hunting. Do you think people stop hunting a particular species just because it's endangered? Not if there's money to be made. Here's just one random article, there's a similar one every week.

Yes yes, I meant that sentence as in "noone wears togas anymore". As in the majority of people dont hunt endangered species as a normal part of day to day life. Nitpickers will always find exceptions, you are right of course, the hunting of endangered species still occurs.

However we dont all do it. We do, however, all go through huge amounts of unneccessary packaging, waste huge amounts of energy unneccessarily, and pollute the environment as regular part of maintaining our lifestyles. A far bigger issue in my opinion than endangered species issues, but the point was, if Greenpeace cared about the environment more than money they would focus on making people feel guilty and encouraging them to help the environment in direct ways, rather then making them feel sorry for animals and encouraging them to pay money.
