Hi,

on Friday I have a meeting in Bonn, I will spend a few hours there, before the meeting, I have never been to Bonn before and I doubt I will go there again. Does anyone have a recommendation regarding things to see/do in Bonn?

EDIT: I will be around the Hilton Hotel ( important info perhaps, since I do not want to got look at something that is on the other side of town...)

Thank you!

Don't go to the "other side" of town; go to the centre. The centre is relative compact and rather attractive. Have a wander around the main square, through the shopping streets and head towards the university, which is also quite impressive.

Aha ok, thank you! will stay away from the "other side" of town , I had a look at the homepage of Bonn, did not really get a feel for what's worth seeing...

There's always lots of info on the Rough Guide website.

Thank you for the info STB!

I know that some people do not like FFM ( I do) but Bonn does not seem that "interesting", but I guess it is different when you live there or something...

...or after you've actually been there. Bonn is a lot smaller than Frankfurt, so it's not fair to compare directly.

Some suggestions - A walk to the botanical gardens and a wander around the Sudstadt.

A walk along the Rhine and through the centre, a look at the Münster if you like churches.

Beethoven's house

Haus der Geschichte - museum of contempory German history documenting the time from the end of the war up to
reunification - (some info in English)

Kunstmuseum - modern art - lots of August Macke

Frauenmuseum - exhibits about significant women in history (with info in English)

A boat trip to Königswinter or Bad Honnef and back on the No 66 tram.

My favourite restaurant for lunch in Bonn is the Cassius Garden in the Cassius Bastei opposite the Hauptbahnhof. Bonn is compact and has an very good tram network, so getting to anywhere you want to visit is simple enough. Without knowing more about your interests it is hard to make further suggestions.

STB, I believe that you can always have a predjudiced opinion regarding something even if you do not know anything about the subject...

Rebecca, thank you for the restaurant suggestion, I was hoping for one ( and all the other suggestions as well of course!)

The "Haus der Geschichte" might be the thing since my boyfriend and I always argue/discuss history , the "Frauenmuseum" it might be interesting to see what such a museum might be like in Germany.

Oh sure one can have a prejudiced opinion, but my belief is that such ignorance is best kept private. Also, on a more practical note, if you want information from people who live in a particular place then it's a good idea not to slag off their city.

Did someone already say that do not cross over to the other side... I guess thats right. Nothing pleasant on the other side.

I suggest you go to the park in Römerbad.

You are at Hilton so thats just next to the Rhine river. Take a ferry along the Rhine river. Just walk out of the hotel and you will see lots of places to book tickets. Go either way along the river - towards Köln or Mainz - both are beautiful.

And yes, do not miss the city center. You are not too far away from that either. Enjoy shopping there.

Cheers,
Bandu.

When I lived in Bonn, this place was my refuge!! Great cake and coffee!!! I was back in Bonn last october and was so thrilled to see its still there.

I guess this is all a bit after the fact now, but rebecca provided a good list of things to do to kill a few hours in Bonn. The museums are really great and if you are an August Macke fan, then dont go to the Modern Art museum, rather to the August-Macke-Haus, its not down on the Museumsmeile, but in the north of the city centre on Bornheimerstr.

Bonn may not be the most rocking spot in germany, but there is more than enough there to keep you busy for a few hours.

Bonn is a fairly sleepy town, once it was the capital of West Germany, you might as well take a train to Cologne or Düsseldorf, both are better cities than Bonn.

Just go to the Fussgaengerzone. It's well cool.
