Hi everyone! I have a dilemma. I would like to get a dog in Berlin but I'm too young to get one because of the involvement required (plus they are too expensive for me atm). Therefore, I would like an alternative pet that's as loyal as a dog, preferably something that doesn't require vet-visits and enjoys walks (I would like to take it places with me, like people do with dogs here).
I've had these pets before:
Turtles - Gorgeous, but BORING!
Fish - BORING!
Bird - Uncontrollable pooing (gross), total airheads, bit me all the time, too much maintenance involved.
Rabbit - It looks like a guinea pig with bigger ears, and that's frightening.
Mice/rats - Gross.
Cat - Not very loyal/affectionate in my experience. (Not a possibility to get one either, due to involvement.)
Also, I would like a pet that can run free most of the time, rather than being caged up, as I am home most of the day.
Has anyone had ferrets? Are they legal in Berlin? Do they require a cage at all or a licence?
Or does anyone have any other ideas? (I know I am being very picky, but animals are a commitment.)

Get some fish! I flushed 3 down the bog at work today cos one of them has started eating the others. And you reckon fish are boring!

An aubergine. Low maintenance costs and you can leave them unattended without them chewing the curtains.

And I would seriously advise any potential pets of yours to steer well clear.

In Germany, Golden Hamsters are quite popular as a pet for a start. Should be also quite cheap.

Dafydd, I'd say you had better stay with the Aubergine as a pet.
I had what we Brits call tortoises for 34 years...
Now my children (or whole family) have guinea pigs. Here are two taken 2 years ago:

oomcha, chances are this will offend you, but I am trying to phrase it as least offensive as possible:
Your attitude towards animals, judging from your post, seems not very mature. Any pet you have had so far got really boring or annoying after a while.
Do the animals a favor and wait a few years until you've grown up a little to get a new pet. Pets are not things, they are living beings that deserve care and love, time and attention, and that cannot just be passed on to someone else because you got bored with them.

you've got to be kidding. Please reread your original post. If you don't have time and think you're not mature for some animals why would you be better with others? You want a pet you can take with you, but you don't want a large pet and have ruled out the majority of common pets.

Who is taking care of your pets now that you are in Germany?
Pets are not decorative items. Many Hollywood stars may give you the impression that that's what they're there for, but they're not. Carrying around a tiny dog in a Louis Vuitton bag is really immature and stupid, no matter how fashionable it might be.

Get a stuffed pet and a designer handbag. You get all the status and none of the hassle. Either that or a new significant other. Get two so they're not lonely. I find humans to have the benefit of being both temporarily amooosing and able to take care of themselves. Like dogs though, it really depends on the human.
ps: yes Im joking, just in case its not obvious.

As for my pets in Australia, they are actually family pets (my parents bought them). In Australia, I live with my family, but I take up most of the responsibilities so that's why I like calling them "my" pets.

They're like my babies.

How long are you going to stay in Germany? If you want a dog so bad, why do you not wait the months until you turn 18 and get one then?
I personally would not want to leave a dog at home by itself all day, as a dog is a social animal, but that is your responsibility.
I'd also want to make sure that I can take the dog back to Australia with me, in your place.
